A small message to all students who are looking for internships. We have been receiving numerous internship requests, and we are not satisfied with their quality of projects and emails we receive. Sharing a very honest review here. #TiredOfReviewing 🤖 Below are few things I find very frustrating while viewing internship applications. 1.Please don't send ChatGPT-generated emails when applying for internships. We are humans, not chatbots, and we don't read AI-generated content. 2.Please use online portfolios and attach links to your work instead of sending us 500MB files.We don’t have too much time to spend on viewing your projects. 3.A minimum of 5 personal design projects is required when you apply at Studiodraft. After 2-3 years of college, we expect to see at least 5 personal projects in your portfolio, in addition to college assignments. 4.Design a portfolio that reflects your personality and graphic style, not some random free stock templates. So next time you are applying for a job or internship please look into these things. Here is everything I know about finding a good intern for your architecture studio: 1. Look for a Strong Portfolio: ✅ Prioritize candidates with portfolios that demonstrate not only skill but also creativity and a passion for architecture. A good portfolio = Organisation, Adobe skills, knowledge on visual demonstration. 2. Technical Proficiency: ✅ Familiarity with essential software and tools in architecture can be a huge plus, enabling interns to contribute effectively from the get-go. You can ask them during the interview which of their portfolio projects were made on which software, to get an idea on their skill set. 3. Communication Skills: ✅ Often overlooked!! Effective communication is crucial in architecture. Interns should be able to articulate ideas clearly and collaborate with team members. 4. Adaptability: ✅ The ability to adapt to new challenges and learn on the job is invaluable. Look for interns who are eager to grow and can handle feedback constructively. Test this during the interview, if you can. 5. PASSION: ✅ You can have the most skilled intern, but if they hate the job you provide to them you guys will get nowhere. Remember, a great intern not only has the skills but also fits well with your team’s culture and shares your practice's vision. I’ve been internship searching for a little over a month and here are my stats so far: 👩🏻💻 Applied: 119 💻 Online Assessments: 2 👩🏻🏫 Interviews: 4 ❌ Rejections: 39 Typically after about a month of job searching, I hit a bit of a lull. It seems like I’ve applied to every single design job I could find on LinkedIn, Indeed, Ziprecruiter, Google Careers, Glassdoor. Every morning I'm discouraged to see “no new jobs posted.” It feels like I am applying much faster than jobs are being posted. What’s worse, every time I check my email I have at least a couple of rejections in my inbox. Something a mentor said to me recently really encouraged me. “Walt Disney received over 300 rejections from investors because his animation idea seemed crazy. He didn’t know which investor was going to believe in him, or if anyone would support his idea at all. Imagine if he had stopped at 290, or even 100.” So if you are in the same boat as me, don’t give up. Your 301st application might be the one 😊.
