That's a wrap on the 2024 Fish Health Section of the American Fisheries Society Summer Seminar Series, where all the PIs are reasonable, all the projects are achievable and all the students are above average. A special thanks to my partners Dr. Nick Phelps (University of Minnesota) and Dr. Megan Shavalier (Michigan State University) for making this all possible. You couldn't ask for a better team. Also thanks to our sponsors. I will thank ya'll in separate posts, but we couldn't do it without you. Thank you so much for supporting graduate student research! Lastly, thanks to the students. Ya'll make this seminar work. If you missed any seminars, don't worry. They are available in our archive. We had 33 student presentations this summer. They were all top shelf. You should check them out. https://lnkd.in/gcKCYxKK On that note...the winners have been announced. Are you, or is anyone you know interested in science? Our scientists are hosting webinars over the next two months where anyone interested in science can hear about a range of topics, ask questions about studying science and find out more about where it could take them in the future. Professor Paul Kenyon, Animal Scientist & Head of School of Agriculture and Environment says the webinars are a great opportunity for attendees to explore different subjects that they can pursue at Massey. “We need the next generation of scientists to help us solve some serious and technical challenges of the future – it will take many hands pulling together to make progress. This has certainly been seen in the recent pandemic and in attempts to combat climate change, for example. The webinars are a great way to explore and include short snapshot of science, will discuss careers in the area, and where they might take you after you graduate.” If you want to change career, explore a new area or are at school and want to know more about an topic you may be studying, join us for a chat. Events run from 28 May, check our website for more details:

Ever have one of those weeks where you dig through old projects and BAM! Your passion reignites brighter than a firefly convention? Yeah, that just happened to me! Unearthing some past gems reminded me why I love this field so much – it's where medical mysteries meet furry (or feathery, or scaly!) detectives. The journey's been a wild ride! Clinical case presentation of a dog with a skin condition who went full-on ninja with fly-biting and surface licking (Spoiler alert: it was fascinating!) Or how about that deep dive into dog-owner relationships and telehealth use? (Turns out, a strong bond might just be the best medicine!). Fast forward to 2021, and I'm presenting a pilot study on predicting horse aggression through YouTube videos (yep, you read that right!).These projects, along with a Master's degree almost landed me "Master Student of the Year" (whoop whoop!), which really fueled my research fire. Even though funding kept me from presenting at the European Veterinary College of Behaviour Medicine and Animal Welfare Congress on some other cool behaviour case studies, it just solidified my mission: research and clinical practice, gotta have them both! These experiences are the happy tail wags in my career story, and I can't wait to see where this amazing field takes me next. So, I urge all of you to nominate those incredible undergraduate and postgraduate students who are making waves in veterinary medicine. Let's celebrate their hard work, fuel their confidence, and pave the way for their success stories! Nomination deadline by the end of this month: https://lnkd.in/eg7DVDZD #vetmed #animalbehavior #research #clinicalpractice #passionproject

⏰⏰ A-level Results 2024 this coming Thursday! ⏰⏰ Thursday will be the culmination of many years of hard work for all my A-level Biology tutees. I sincerely hope all goes smoothly for all of you however just remember these results are not the be all and end all. If things don't go to plan it is better to be prepared and have a plan of action for all the different eventualities: ❓would you accept your firm place ❓would you accept your insurance if you miss out on your firm grades ❓would you accept a place through clearing if you miss out on firm and insurance (you must look in advance to see what is available-prepare a list of possibilities this week or next) ❓would you accept a deferred place ❓would you reapply next year and have a gap year? ❓apply for a job, earn money and gain experience and qualifications along the way 💡Check how close your overall Biology UMS mark is to the next grade boundary. I would recommend a re-mark of at least one paper if you are 4 or less marks away (Bear in mind marks can go both up and down.) Ensure this gets organised on Thursday if your university place may be affected by it. 💡 ☎Make sure you have all useful telephone numbers to hand & a fully charged phone-just in case. ☎ Best wishes to you all and do let me know how you've got on! Please remember I'm happy to offer any guidance you may require; just WhatsApp me +34 696 266013 Nicky
