But for many of us, the reality is that in spite of being busier than ever at work, we're also lonely. The 2024 State of the Global Workplace report by Gallup finds that one in five employees worldwide currently feels lonely at work. This is not just a personal problem, it's an organizational issue as well (work loneliness is having a huge impact on healthcare costs, absenteeism, and turnover). Work-related stressors negatively affect employee well-being ----- Work-related stressors like high work intensity, unsocial working hours, and financial worries significantly affect employees' health and well-being. Research from the European Working Conditions provides insights into how these factors impact employees differently. ---- Key findings 1. Work intensity High work intensity leads to increased anxiety, exhaustion, and headaches. Those with higher intensity often feel at risk due to work demands. 2. Unsocial working hours Those working unsocial hours show more presenteeism (working while sick), and report higher levels of exhaustion, health risks, and lower mental well-being than those with regular hours. 3. Financial worries Employees struggling financially report more anxiety and musculoskeletal disorders and perceive a higher health risk due to work. #ORC calls for addressing these stressors, which is crucial for healthier workplaces. Organizations must strive for balanced work hours, manageable workloads, and supportive financial policies to enhance employee well-being. High demands coupled with low control over tasks can create a recipe for workplace stress, as identified by Demand-Control Theory. This stress can lead to burnout, decreased job satisfaction, and even physical health problems. To foster a thriving workforce, employers should prioritize strategies that empower employees, such as: Autonomy in decision-making: Trust employees to take ownership of their tasks and provide opportunities for independent problem-solving. Upskilling and support: Equip employees with the necessary skills and resources to excel in their roles through ongoing training and support programs. Cultivating a positive work environment: Foster a collaborative and supportive culture that values open communication and appreciation. By implementing these strategies, organizations can create a work environment that empowers employees, reduces stress, and fosters a more productive and fulfilling workplace.
