Stock photos are not the problem. The problem is with how they’re used. Here’s what I mean: Most early-stage startups don’t have a ton of design resources. So when it comes to visualizing high-level concepts, stock photos are usually the best option available. But what they are not, is a substitute for your specific and unique brand elements. For example, using a stock team photo instead of a real picture of your own colleagues, or a generic product mockup instead of a real screenshot or demo… you get the idea. It might look aesthetic but you will lose your audience on a more important factor — trust. Don’t sacrifice authenticity for aesthetics.

If you don’t have product market fit… A rebrand isn’t going to save you. Your logo doesn’t matter. Your fonts don’t matter. Your color palette doesn’t matter. Your website design doesn’t matter. Your tone of voice doesn’t matter. Your textures and icons don’t matter. Your swag doesn’t matter. All that matters is solving your customer’s problem and getting them to pay you for it. It’s been an incredible journey building Polaris, my design and branding studio, alongside my partner Anjali. We’ve combined our strengths—Anjali specializes in logos and custom illustrations, while I focus on packaging design and brand language—creating a complementary balance that’s vital in this journey. A few key lessons learned so far: -Business Mindset Matters: Balancing design work and marketing is crucial. It's easy to get caught up in projects, but keeping the momentum in business development is just as important. -Pricing Challenges: Determining rates is always tricky. Starting low helps build a client base, but learning when to raise prices is key. Those "I should have charged more" moments come with experience. -Studio Space Set-Up: We’ve cleared level one—setting up our own studio with steady cash flow. Now, we’re focused on growth and expansion, learning to balance resources wisely. -The Multi-Tasking Game: As a startup, funds for hiring are tight, so being adaptable and wearing multiple hats is a must. Thankfully, multitasking is one of my strong suits. Looking forward to sharing more insights as we continue to grow Polaris.
