The evolution of U.S. engineered wood products has advanced in a logical, step-wise fashion. Wood panels were first made for interior applications from older, finer-grained veneers bonded with animal proteins like milk and collagen. Then petroleum-based, thermosetting glues were developed that also permitted the development of durable, Douglas fir, exterior panels. As the unsustainably-grown, old-growth, Douglas fir softwood timber began to run out, log prices surged and plywood producers searched further afield for suitable, replacement, softwood (and hardwood) trees and veneers. Which, in the case of SE Asia’s hardwoods, were also unsustainably-grown. So they also began to run out. Papers were saturated and coated with thermosetting glues for synthetic face veneer replacements. In the 80’s new private timberland institutional investors rapidly cut out the remaining, old, finer-grained U.S. trees and replaced them with short rotation, smaller diameter trees. Most were traditional plywood species but they were too coarsely grained for traditional plywood products. So plywood producers turned their attention to less-financially motivated private landowners and public timberland owners and their remaining, larger-diameter, finer-grained trees. Innovators began producing substitute exterior wood panels from wafers of smaller diameter, more sustainably grown aspen and southern pines. Struggling to compete with these cheap OSB panels, softwood plywood producers automated their more labor-intensive processes and turned their attention to the market niches. OSB producers then did the same, also by improving resins and production processes and incorporating synthetic overlays. The general industry trends? Driven by declining supplies (and surging prices) of unsustainably-grown timber, engineered wood products producers have turned to more sustainably-grown trees and new technologies, steadily improving their resin and processing technologies. As will, inevitably, the producers of the new engineered timber products. Weyerhaeuser’s new half billion dollar bet on strand timbers? Now that’s a development worth following.

Next ➡ Transforming Timber into Essential Products 🌲 Once sawlogs reach the mill, they're processed into a wide range of solid wood products that form the backbone of construction and manufacturing: 🪚 Lumber, Timbers, Plywood, and Veneers are crafted from high-quality sawlogs, becoming essential materials for construction, furniture, and shipping. 🏠 Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is an engineered wood panel made from wood flakes, bonded under pressure. It's a key material in construction, used for walls, flooring, and roof decking. ♻️ By-Products are created during the milling process, such as sawdust, chips, and bark. These are not wasted—they're repurposed for papermaking, engineered wood products, biomass energy, and even landscaping. 🏗️ In Secondary Manufacturing, milled boards are turned into ready-to-use consumer products like furniture, pallets, wood trusses, and flooring, completing the journey from forest to finished product. Inspecting red oak veneer logs to ensure high quality requires a systematic approach. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you perform a thorough inspection: 1. Initial Visual Inspection • Examine the exterior of the log for straightness. Logs that are straight and have minimal curvature will yield better veneer sheets and reduce waste. • Check the bark condition. Logs with intact, healthy bark are more likely to have high-quality interiors. Avoid logs with signs of rot or decay on the bark. 2. Diameter Measurement • Measure the log’s diameter. Logs with a diameter of at least 16 inches are preferred, as they typically produce wider and more consistent veneer sheets. • Ensure uniform diameter along the length of the log to maintain veneer quality during slicing. 3. Surface Defects • Look for visible defects such as knots, cracks, insect damage, and scars. Logs with fewer surface defects are more suitable for veneer production. • Check for splits or cracks, especially at the ends of the log. End splits can propagate during processing, leading to waste and reduced veneer yield. 4. Color Consistency • Inspect the log for consistent color. High-quality red oak veneer should have a uniform color without significant discoloration or dark streaks. • Avoid logs with significant sapwood presence, as these may not match the color of the heartwood and can affect the overall quality of the veneer. 5. Growth Ring Analysis • Examine the growth rings on a cross-section of the log. Look for tight, evenly spaced rings, as these indicate stable growth and higher veneer quality. • Avoid logs with ring shake or signs of separation between growth rings, as this can lead to veneer defects. 6. Log Ends Inspection • Check the ends of the log for signs of heart check (radial cracks starting from the center). While minor heart checks are common, extensive cracking can affect the yield. • Ensure the pith (center) is intact, as a compromised pith can indicate potential internal defects. 7. Moisture Content • Assess the log’s moisture level. Logs should be adequately hydrated but not overly wet or dry. Proper moisture content helps prevent defects during veneer cutting and drying. 8. Heartwood to Sapwood Ratio • Evaluate the heartwood and sapwood proportion. Red oak logs with a higher proportion of heartwood are typically more valuable for veneer production due to their color consistency and durability. 9. Grain Quality • Assess the grain structure by making a small cut or viewing a cut section. Look for straight and uniform grain patterns, as irregular grain can affect the appearance and processing of the veneer. 10. Log Provenance • Consider the source of the log. Logs from different regions may have different color, texture, and grain characteristics. Logs from reputable regions known for quality red oak should be prioritized.

Hey Guys I’m wood chip, briquettes supplier and also deal in industrial scraps. Would be very thankful if I get any lead from your end for wood chips and scrap. What is wood chips? Wood chips are small pieces of wood that have been cut or shredded from larger pieces of wood, typically from trees or wood waste. They are often used for various purposes, such as: - Mulch for gardening and landscaping - Bedding material for small animals - Fuel for wood-burning stoves, boilers, or furnaces - Raw material for producing paper, cardboard, or other cellulose products - Component in the production of engineered wood products, like plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) Wood chips can be made from different types of wood, such as softwoods (like pine or spruce) or hardwoods (like oak or maple), and can vary in size and texture depending on the intended use.

When drying wood for indoor woodworking applications, the higher the starting moisture content, the longer the drying process will take. But moisture content isn't the only factor. Other factors to consider are things like if it's a hardwood or a softwood, how thick the boards are, what type of drying process you are using, etc.... Check out this article from Bessemeter: "What Every Woodworker Should Know About Kiln Drying Wood" #kilnDrying #MoistureContent
