Selecting the right fabric is a crucial first step in transforming a design into reality, where innovation, sustainability, and artistry come together to shape the future of fashion. Equally important is choosing the right location for sourcing, as it significantly influences the effectiveness of the strategy. Gandhinagar Market in Delhi, located in the eastern part of the city, is a prominent hub for textile sourcing. It serves as a vital center for fabric, apparel, and garment traders, attracting buyers from across India and neighboring countries. The market offers a vast selection of products, including cotton, silk, synthetic fabrics, and ready-made garments, making it a preferred destination for retailers, manufacturers, and designers alike. For anyone in the fashion industry, this market remains a go-to place for raw material sourcing and inspiration. #Sourcing #Gandhinagar #Rawmaterial #Apparel #Fashion #HomeTextile

#BrandsThatNeverTookOff #PaoBhaji #HuntedAndGatheredStreetWear #ExportSurplusFashionwear This was a label for garments I created in the early 2000s, screen-printed on a cotton narrow fabric used for canvas school bags! Pao Bhaji is a popular Mumbai street food made from a mix of leftover vegetables at the end of the day with vegetable sellers, available cheap for everyone. I had that so much fabric goes waste, as extra production or rejections on export orders and available by weight, why cannot a fashion brand be created stitching those fabrics into contemporary garments. What's available on streets in Janpath or Sarojini Nagar or street-fashion equivalents everywhere, are readymade garments leftover from exports via rejection with minimal faults, known as #exportsurplus. The surplus fabrics are of no value unless stitched. This was too early as no e-commerce and logistics, and you needed volumes to get the stitching sweatshops to stitch them, retail tailors being too expensive! #BeingBeforeTime #TimingIsEssential

Is Surat ready to step into Bangladesh’s shoes in the global garment game? The garment world is shifting FAST. With Bangladesh, the second-largest exporter of ready-made garments, facing political instability, labor unrest, and financial strains, global brands are turning their gaze toward India. And Surat, the textile powerhouse, is ready to shine. Surat’s garment sector, traditionally known for ethnic wear, kurtis, and affordable women’s clothing, is now seeing a surge in inquiries for ready-to-wear garments from international brands. With a current annual growth rate of 12%, experts predict a whopping 20-25% growth if these inquiries convert into solid orders. But Surat isn’t alone in this race. Textile hubs like Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Noida are also stepping up to seize the opportunity. Surat already generates a monthly turnover of ₹600 crore, thanks to its robust man-made fiber industry. With global brands knocking, this could multiply. Here’s what makes Surat the perfect contender: 1. Strategic partnerships: Many global brands already source fabric from Surat, making it a natural extension to produce ready-made garments. 2. Man-made fibers advantage: The city's expertise in this segment caters to growing global demand. 3. Diverse offerings: From denim to ethnic wear, Surat is ready to expand its horizons. Challenges to Watch Out For: - Sustaining growth: Long-term growth demands policy support and infrastructure development. - Worker welfare: Learning from Bangladesh's struggles, it’s critical to ensure ethical and fair practices. India’s textile industry stands at a crossroads. With Bangladesh’s challenges creating a gap, can we, as a nation, step up to lead responsibly and sustainably? The big picture: This shift is not just an opportunity for Surat but a wake-up call for India's garment industry to align with global standards in innovation, speed, and ethical manufacturing. How do you think India can grab this opportunity without repeating mistakes made elsewhere? #TextileIndustry #Surat #GarmentManufacturing #IndiaGrowthStory #SustainableFashion #GlobalTrade #MakeInIndia #EthicalFashion

Surat’s garment sector set to grow 20-25% as global brands seek stability away from Bangladesh. Textile industry insiders in Surat said they are getting enquiries for the production and supply of ready-to-wear garments from such brands. If these materialize into orders, they estimate the growth of Surat's garment sector could accelerate to 20-25%, from the current 12% a year. Textile hubs in Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Noida too could benefit from new orders. While Bangladesh is the second-largest exporter of ready-made garments behind China, it is highly dependent on the fabric supplied from Surat, the textile city of India. As big brands are looking for alternative sources amid increasing political instability and law and order issues, as well as unrest among textile industry workers, in Bangladesh, Indian companies see it as an opportunity to supply more value-added products to global markets. Essentially, Surat's garment sector has been producing ethnic wear, kurtis and low-priced women's wear and some denim," said Ashish Gujarati, a former president of the South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce. "There has been a significant spurt in enquiries by the big brands after trouble started in Bangladesh, which would certainly benefit the sector majorly." Surat currently has a monthly turnover of about ₹600 crore. While it largely deals in man-made fibre, the cotton hubs in Tirupur and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, Ludhiana in Punjab and Noida in Uttar Pradesh are also expected to reap the benefits of the developments in the neighboring country, While we shall see some gains in the short term, if the situation is capitalised well, we should be able to grow significantly in the garment manufacturing sector,” said Gujarati. “But that would also call for some assistance from the government.” The garment sector in Bangladesh has already been under pressure and the country has reported unrest among workers due to financial stress. Clusters in that country are located around Dhaka, Chittagong, Gazipur, Ashulia, Narayanganj, Khulna, Narsingdi and Rajshahi. Dhaka and Chittagong have been facing major unrest, while trouble has been reported from other areas as well. The organization also recommended global brands sourcing garments from Bangladesh to “avoid contractual cascading or seeking blanket assurances from suppliers, but instead invest in meaningful stakeholder engagement when identifying potential and actual impacts and developing corrective action plans”. It suggested brands join hands with trade unions for the betterment of workers, including targeted training programme. These are expected to ensure better working conditions and fair wages for textile workers

I hope our RMG leaders and economists are taking note of the current situation. If this persists, with no law, no administration, and without reaching a consensus, we risk regressing significantly. Our economy lacks diversification, making us particularly vulnerable to such instability. The halt in both imports and exports is alarming. Other countries are poised to fill the vacuum in the apparel industry created by our instability, which is understandable from their perspective. This situation calls for national innovation to navigate the current crisis. We need to restore the peace and law as soon as possible. Or we may face yet another famine in the coming days, I am afraid. I sincerely hope Prof Yunus will be able to get a diverse and competent panel of advisers and navigate the difficult situation we are in. This will be daunting task, indeed. #RMG #WORKERS #Industrybuilding #Bangladesheconomy
Uncertainty in Bangladesh , will this be an opportunity for Indian Apparel industry to grow their Global Share? This is the Question being asked by many of my Friends and particularly friends from Media. 30 Years back Bangladesh doesn’t have any great infrastructure to produce Fabric, they import fabric from Countries like India, China, Taiwan for their apparel Industry but as on date they have a build a huge empire with state of art infrastructure from Fibre to Fashion catering close to 9% of the global share. Bangladesh’s 90% of foreign exchange comes out of Textile Exports and as they are holding the status of under developed nation they have been granted with aids by developed economies, they have capitalised the duty free status with Europe which gave tough time to Indian Apparel exports, most of the leading retailers of Europe shifted major volume of business to BD and at a stage they have shifted the sourcing offices to Dhaka from India. BD’s Duty Free status expired in 2023 has been renewed till 2025 there is a speculation that it may not be renewed further and another section claims that it will be further extended till 2029 under this circumstance major retailers and brands started eying on Indian Apparel Industry particularly Knitwear category as the price of Indian Knitted Garment and BD knitted garment are more or less at par even BD with a duty free status and in few cases Indian prices are less than BD. BD kept it’s USD value stable for the last 10 years and duty free status has been extended with a condition that their currency value should be matching the global market which made them less competitive , secondly increase in wages and salary and other price factors , added to that some decrease in export incentives and grants made them no more a cheaper sourcing nation. Upcoming European legislation’s on Environment and social also keeps them far away whereas India is proactive in this area and highly prepared to adhere the new legislation’s Today’s scenario at BD strengthen the decision for the reasons mentioned above of shifting reasonable production back to India. Apart from this increase of BD merchandise and fabric shipping into India since 2017 started declining since 6 months. Indian retailers and the Foreign companies operating in Indian retail also plans to increase their production locally foreseeing many issues. A friend of mine working with an International testing agency confirmed this as the testing numbers have increased in multi-folds. My sincere appreciation is always due to Bangladesh as they have come a long way, sheer hard work and adhering to the day to day changes and demands made them what they are today, as an Indian more than a garment exporter I pray for them to get back to their normalcy at the earliest as we don’t want to build our growth on someone’s weakness we want to grow our business with our own strength and sincere hard-work. Will write on Situation of Indian apparel industry -KD

Surat's garment sector set for 25% growth as Bangladesh faces strain: Report 1) Surat's textile industry is experiencing increased attention from both global and local brands as political instability and worker unrest in Bangladesh prompt companies to seek alternative garment suppliers. 2) Industry experts in Surat report receiving a high volume of inquiries for ready-to-wear garment production, which could greatly enhance the sector's growth. 3) Surat's garment sector, currently expanding at 12% annually, is expected to see a 20-25% growth if these inquiries result in confirmed orders, experts suggest. Textile hubs in Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Noida are also poised to benefit from this shift, it was reported.
