Commemorating the #InternationalDayofHappiness, Gallup released the 2024 World Happiness Report today. Included is a breakdown by country and age group. Finland held its position as the # 1 happiest country in the world, followed closely by many of its Nordic neighbors. 🌍 The U.S. fell out of the top 20 for the first time since the annual report was released 12 years ago dropping from # 15 (in 2023) to # 23 (in 2024). The reason why? Happiness among younger people has declined significantly, and the culprit seems to be #loneliness. 💔 A sense of belonging is a basic human need. Alleviate loneliness by 1) seeking out like-minded people; 2) creating opportunities for gatherings; 3) brushing up on social skills. See more ways to #takeaction from Harvard Health. https://lnkd.in/g6c5wmZf 📉 The Gallup poll, in partnership with Sustainable Development Solutions Network and the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, gathers responses from 100K+ people globally. People in 140+ countries rank their happiness by imagining a ladder with 10 steps. The lowest step of the ladder represents the worst of the worst a person's life can be. The tenth and highest step represents a person's best life. Researchers then ask people which step they believe they're on. 🪜 #positivepsychology #mindsetmatters #coaching https://lnkd.in/gBZTBdJ3

World Happiness Report 2024: Finland tops the list!! Finland has once again secured its top position as the world's happiest country for the seventh consecutive year, as per the latest UN-sponsored World Happiness Report unveiled today. If reports are to go by, Nordic nations continue to dominate the top rankings, with Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden trailing closely behind Finland. Meanwhile, Afghanistan maintains its position at the bottom of the list among 143 surveyed countries, grappling with persistent humanitarian crises following the Taliban's resurgence in 2020. This year's report marks a significant departure though as the United States and Germany slip out of the top 20 happiest nations, and landing at 23rd and 24th place, respectively. By contrast, Costa Rica and Kuwait have managed to break into the top 20, and secured the 12th and 13th positions. Notably, there's a noticeable shift where the happiest countries no longer include any of the world's largest nations, with only the Netherlands and Australia with populations exceeding 15 million within the top 10, and Canada and the UK with populations over 30 million within the top 20. Changes in happiness levels since 2006-2010 have been noteworthy, with Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Jordan witnessing significant declines, while Eastern European countries like Serbia, Bulgaria, and Latvia have experienced notable changes. The happiness ranking considers individuals' self-assessed evaluations of life satisfaction, alongside factors such as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and corruption. Jennifer De Paola, a happiness researcher at the University of Helsinki, attributes Finland's high life satisfaction to Finns' strong connection to nature and a healthy work-life balance. She stresses that Finns prioritise aspects beyond financial gain, benefitting from a robust welfare society, trust in government institutions, low corruption levels, and universal healthcare and education. The current report also indicates a pattern where younger cohorts typically express greater levels of happiness in contrast to older demographics, with the exception observed in North America, Australia, and New Zealand, where youth happiness has dwindled since 2006-2010. However, central and eastern Europe have seen an uptick in happiness across all age brackets during this timeframe, while Western Europe maintains steady happiness levels across generations. The report raises concerns regarding the escalating disparity in happiness worldwide, particularly among older individuals and in Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting discrepancies in income, education, healthcare, and social support systems.

According to the latest World Happiness Report from Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and the WHR’s Editorial Board, they have found that older people are generally happier than the younger ones. Here's the top 5 interesting findings that I have picked up. 1️⃣ 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘼𝙜𝙚 𝘿𝙮𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙨 𝙎𝙝𝙞𝙛𝙩 - The World Happiness Report shows shifting happiness levels with notable declines among younger individuals in North America and Western Europe, highlighting the greater well-being enjoyed by the economically stable older generation. 2️⃣ 𝙍𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙨 - Despite political unrest, happiness has increased in Central and Eastern Europe, contrasting declines in South Asia and the Middle East, showcasing resilience and positive change in certain regions. 3️⃣ 𝙄𝙣𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙞𝙣 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 - There's an uptick in happiness inequality almost globally, with Europe being the exception. Between 2021 and 2023, negative feelings were notably more common in women than men across various regions, intensifying with age. Post-pandemic, the challenge has grown for working mothers who manage both family and job demands, particularly as some employers push for a return to office settings. 4️⃣ 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 - The report notes that people born since 1980 are generally less happy, indicating changing happiness dynamics across generations and the challenges they face. Through mentoring, I've observed fluctuating happiness levels, addressing these through mindset workshops utilizing my gaming simulations to foster resilience. "Because we don't stop playing when we grow old, we grow old when we stop playing"-Geroge Bernard Shaw. 5️⃣ 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝙍𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 - Finland leads in happiness, followed closely by Denmark. The rankings highlight diverse national well-being approaches, emphasizing happiness as both a personal and collective journey. In conclusion, the report does not just look at life-course, but also what's going on in the society and the world. So, do you think the reports are reflective of your own happiness level as well as that of your countrymen? * As a #NotTheUsualMentor, I help organisations improve workplace happiness through game-based learning and expert mentorship. #gamebasedlearning #mentoringmatters #personaldevelopment #employeewellbeing #HappinessAtWork https://lnkd.in/edkZna_R

The World Happiness Report is out, and it offers fascinating insights into global happiness levels! While Finland retains the top spot, New Zealand holds strong at 11th! Powered by Gallup’s research and analytics, alongside the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network and the University of Oxford's Wellbeing Research Centre, the report helps explore factors influencing happiness around the world. The report reveals interesting variations in happiness levels across different age groups in New Zealand. According to the report's analysis, older Kiwis (6th position) are happier than their younger counterparts (27th position), a trend similar to the U.S, Canada and Australia. This finding aligns with a broader global trend of increasing inequality in happiness across age groups. Why measure happiness? It isn't just a feel-good metric. It's a powerful indicator of a nation's well-being and societal progress. By understanding what makes people happy, policymakers, businesses, and communities can work towards creating environments that foster greater well-being for all. How happy are you? Thousands of people's answers to this question in countries around the globe form the basis of an annual World Happiness Report. This year, Finland is at the top of the list. Researchers point to factors including high levels of social support and healthy life expectancy, to explain the top perch of several Scandinavian countries. North America does not fare as well overall. As a nation, the United States dropped in the global ranking from 15th to 23rd. But researchers point to striking generational divides. #worldhappinessreport #happiness #gallup #wellbeing #WHR2024

Finland is once again the world’s happiest country! For the seventh year straight, Finland has topped the list of the world’s happiest countries in an annual UN-sponsored World Happiness Report published today. The survey asks each participant to score their life as a whole, considering what they value. “And you find out Finland’s pretty rich in all of those things, like wallets being returned if they’re dropped in the street, people helping each other day in and day out, very high quality and universally distributed health and education opportunities — so everyone more or less comes out of the starting gate the same,” says John Helliwell, emeritus professor of economics and founding editor of the World Happiness Report. I can totally relate to these definitions. Finland is one of the world's leading countries in fostering equality. Equality is a social innovation that has brought growth and prosperity to society when the contribution of both women and men has been available. Finland promotes global commitment to equality. It wants to define the concept in a new way and put equality in the spotlight. According to the latest surveys, safety is one of the most important values for Finns. Trust is one of the most important factors here. As Tero Solante, Director of Digitalization of the Finnish Defense Forces, said a week ago at DNA Oyj's Cyber resilience as business security event. Finns trust the public administration's ability to fight cyber attacks significantly more than other Nordic countries. Resiliency is everyone's concern, because a digitalized society cannot run for many days without critical infrastructure and services. I am proud of my country. I hope that we Finns will more actively and courageously share our know-how and support around us, but also stay open to learning from others. Together we are stronger. Every single action is important in building a safer and more valuable future together. https://lnkd.in/dGFQrcJg

💭 No wonder there is a huge disparity in how different generations view wellbeing, its importance and indeed its relevance in the workplace…it’s easy to trivialise issues when they don’t affect you. 📊 I’ve spent an interesting couple of hours this week analysing the latest data from the newly released 2024 World Happiness Report. 🌍 The report analyses wellbeing in 140 nations and has been collated by colleagues at Oxford University’s Wellbeing Research Centre, Gallup and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. 📰 The main headline being ‘disconcerting drops in youth happiness especially in North America and western Europe.’ 🇬🇧 British people under 30 ranked 32nd in the rankings, behind nations such as Moldova, Kosovo and even El Salvador, which has one of the world’s highest murder rates. 👴🏻 In contrast British over-60s are now in the top 20 of the world’s happiest older generations. 🧒🏻 For the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, happiness has decreased in all age groups, but especially for the young, so much so that the young are now the least happy age group the report found. As ever it’s tough to define the exact causes but no doubt the impact of rising social media use, income inequalities, the housing crisis, and fears about war and climate change are to blame on the happiness of children and young people. 📱 💰 🏠 🌎 😊 The report tracks subjective wellbeing using respondents own assessments of their lives and their positive and negative emotions. Once again Finland, Denmark and Iceland were the top three happiest countries. 🗺️ Interestingly Costa Rica and Kuwait are now in the top 20. Afghanistan and Lebanon stayed as the two least happy nations as we would expect. Countries that enjoyed increasing happiness included many African nations, Cambodia, and China. Serbia recorded the biggest increase in happiness. 😎 The important point here being childhood wellbeing and emotional health may be the best predictor for adult life satisfaction, the report found. Earlier research has concluded adolescents and young adults who report higher life satisfaction earn significantly higher levels of income later in life, even accounting for differences in education, intelligence, physical health and self-esteem. 🏢 Not only is this food for thought for organisations re future productivity but it must be a driver for governments concerned with how future generations will be supported. What do you think? #workplacewellbeing #happiness #wellbeingstrategy
