In the early stage of AI adoption, I often ask friends how they use AI in their organisations if at all, and the answer is quite astonishing. Either a complete blank of "this can't be used in my team/ industry/ company" or the other extreme where" we are all over it, all the strategies, papers, team road maps include a well documented section on leveraging AI". Can we already start correlating company success by the wide use of AI in their workforce? "Companies that adopt AI will benefit from what the authors call the triple product: more-efficient operations, more-productive workforces, and growth with a sharper vision and focus. They must be prepared to make trust and safety among their top priorities and to cultivate a group of employees who are early adopters."

Interesting article about the impacts of AI on the need for expertise and the strategic approach businesses are taking to benefit from new technological advances.

This is a great HBR piece by friends at Microsoft and Harvard: Bobby Yerramilli-Rao, Karim Lakhani, John Corwin, Yang Li. It touches on the near term opportunities from GenAI – cost savings, productivity improvements and competitiveness – as well as the potential threats to businesses from customers changing expectations and competitors changing the game. We live in a fascinating time!

What types of expertise that we currently posses will need to evolve the most if we are to remain ahead of AI? It’s amazing how different the future strategy world will be compared to how it was when Bobby and I joined McKinsey in London in the 90s!

An insightful article from Harvard Business Review (HBR) titled "Strategy in an Era of Abundant (AI) Expertise". Very well observed that "AI assistants will effectively put at least a base amount of expertise into the hands of every employee who uses them, enabling that person to perform better." This idea is supported by another study on the AI pair-programming tool Copilot, which revealed that "Productivity varied by developer experience, with less experienced developers getting more benefit from Copilot." Here's an article on AI's impact on business strategy. Karim Lakhani, John Corwin, Yang Li and I believe that as AI provides seamless access to broad expertise, companies will need to review how to compete. Yes, AI is a productivity driver, but it is so much more than that. CEOs and Boards need to act now to secure and improve their competitive position.
