Day 9: Community-Led Infrastructure Development 🏘️ **Community-Led Infrastructure Development** In some regions, communities are taking charge of their development by building essential infrastructure such as storage facilities and roads. These grassroots efforts often lead to more sustainable and context-specific solutions. For example, in Malawi, farmer groups have constructed warehouses to store their produce, significantly reducing post-harvest losses. Such initiatives demonstrate the power of community action in addressing local challenges and improving market access. Tomorrow, we’ll highlight a successful example from Kenya. #CommunityDevelopment #SustainableAgriculture @ActionAid @PracticalAction @GlobalCommunities

Access to Clean Water in Al-Khizifi Village! 💧☀️ Welthungerhilfe, with support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has rehabilitated a solar-powered Reverse Osmosis (RO) water station in Al-Khizifi village, Tikrit, Salah Al-Din. Before: ✖️The station, built in 2008, stopped functioning properly by 2012. ✖️Families struggled to access clean water. ✖️Many relied on expensive, hard-to-transport water or unsafe tanker trucks. ✖️Lack of clean water led to illnesses, especially among children. ✖️Even the local elementary school had no reliable water supply. In 2024: 🔍 Welthungerhilfe conducted a technical assessment of the station in collaboration with the Directorate of Water. 🗣️ We listened to the community’s urgent need for clean, safe drinking water. Now: ✅ The Reverse Osmosis equipment and station are fully rehabilitated. ✅ The generator was replaced with solar power—clean energy for clean water! ☀️ ✅ Through connecting the water station to the elementary school, now students and teachers have access to drinking water! These #WASH initiatives are part of the Strengthening Food Security for Women and Vulnerable IDPs, Returnees, Refugees, and Host Communities in Ninewa and Salah Al-Din project 🌱 Together, we’re building stronger, #healthier communities with #access to cleaning water 💧🚰 Music credits: Munir Bashir and his quartet Iraqui Dabka. #CleanWater #SolarEnergy #Iraq #SustainableDevelopment #Welthungerhilfe #ZeroHunger💧

Scoop holes: a last resort for water in arid regions. These shallow, hand-dug pits provide contaminated water, causing illness and missed school days. The Water Project works to replace these unsafe sources with sustainable alternatives like wells and rainwater tanks, improving health and education in sub-Saharan Africa.

🌟 Starting 2025 with Purpose and Hope 🌟 As I step into a new year with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, I’m deeply moved to share a story I wrote that highlights why our work matters so much. In Zimbabwe’s Binga district, the devastating effects of prolonged drought have left communities grappling with hunger, poverty, and uncertainty. But amidst these challenges, there is hope. The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society, supported by the IFRC, is transforming lives through school feeding programs and food assistance. Over 12,000 children in 11 schools now receive a daily serving of fortified porridge—often their only meal of the day. This simple yet powerful intervention has increased school attendance, reduced dropouts, and given these children the energy to learn and dream. For families like Esnathi Mudhimba’s, food assistance is more than survival—it’s a lifeline. And for farmers and communities, programs, like rehabilitated water points and livestock care, are building resilience for the future. As we head into 2025, let this story remind us of the pressing needs in our communities and the incredible impact we can make together. I’m inspired to do more, and I invite you to join us in creating a future where no one is left behind. 💬 Read more about these life-changing initiatives: https://bit.ly/3W8QJbL 📸 Photos by yours truly, capturing resilience in action. #IFRC #RedCross #HumanitarianWork #DroughtResponse #Resilience #Binga #Zimbabwe #Hope

Every March, World Water Day raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. However, on this day, we would like to share what the local team at our Learning & Leadership Center in Kafue, Zambia is faced with during the current drought. Due to the national disaster, when the rolling power cuts hit our community each day, the water company cannot supply water to the community. They, too, need a steady supply of electricity. This means that our Center needs to collect water in storage containers when the electricity is on in order to have an ample supply for the children and youth. This isn't an easy task when over 250 daily meals are being served. What can you do to help? Follow the link to learn more: https://bit.ly/43j9RGF #WorldWaterDay #WaterCrisis

The WaterStarters program, spearheaded by Amref and KCIC Consulting, is revolutionizing water access and livelihood development in Kenya. Aiming to create climate-resilient communities, this initiative focuses on co-funded borehole projects and economic empowerment strategies. Over the next seven years, the program is set to benefit 1.5 million Kenyans in water-stressed areas. By employing a franchise model that requires communities to co-invest at least 15% of the initial costs, WaterStarters fosters a sense of ownership and ensures the project's financial sustainability. Our blended finance model and multi-faceted sustainability measures—including financial, social, environmental, and technological aspects—ensure long-term impact. Field visits to projects like Kibiko, Kumpa, and Nareto Latia showcase the success of community co-investment and empowerment initiatives. However, challenges such as community resistance to change and high diesel costs for water pumping persist. Our comprehensive recommendations aim to address these challenges and scale successful models. Join us in our mission to transform lives and build resilient communities in Kenya. Being part of the B1G1 initiative means that every time something good happens in our business, we make something amazing happen in the world. From planting a tree on your behalf, when you get in touch, to providing 1,825 days of lifesaving clean water to people in Cambodia, when you attend an open programme, we are committed to a vision of business as a force for good. Through B1G1, we can choose from a wide range of verified projects around the world and integrate these impacts into our business. One project that you have helped support is the MSABI project. Here's a brief update on what your impacts have helped achieve: Flood Response: MSABI, in partnership with Forum CC, reached over 2,771 people in Kilombero and Malinyi Districts, distributing cleaning materials and providing crucial WASH education. They also shared 70 disaster preparedness posters and banners across the region. National Environmental Campaign: MSABI joined the 2024 national campaign led by the Vice-President's office, focusing on sanitation and environmental challenges. They collaborated with Lungongole Primary School, planting 475 trees under the inspiring slogan “SOMA NA MTI” (“Study with a tree”). Community Engagement: The MSABI team visited the Kilombero District Council, demonstrating the impact of their ceramic water filters. They've successfully distributed and sold filters to 13 rural families, further supporting local health initiatives. Together, we’re making a difference in Tanzania’s communities! 💧🌱 #GoMakeADifference #B1G1 #ThinkingDifferently #BCorp

This past week, I had the privilege of auditing 7 rural Water Treatment Plants for one of the KZN District Municipalities. It was an eye-opening experience, filled with both challenges and moments of deep appreciation. In rural areas, the day-to-day struggles are immense—people often face a lack of access to clean water, and municipal workers are doing their best under tough circumstances. The scale of South Africa's water issues really hits home when you see the reality on the ground. But amidst these challenges, there’s also beauty. Rural Natal is breathtaking, and it reminds you just how precious water is. Without it, there is no life, no community, no future. It’s humbling to see just how much infrastructure our country has in even the most remote areas, and how crucial it is for us to keep building and maintaining it. As the world gets hotter and drier, and our population continues to grow, we must find innovative ways to reduce water usage, reuse water where we can, and eliminate wastage. This work will never be "done," but after spending time with the dedicated people in these communities, I’m left with a glimmer of hope. Together, we can ensure that water—our most precious resource—sustains us for generations to come. #WaterConservation #Sustainability #RuralDevelopment #KZN #WaterIsLife #Talbot
