Yacht Master 200GT Limited: Entry Requirements and Qualifications Thinking of becoming a Yacht Master 200GT Limited? Here’s everything you need to know about the entry requirements and qualifications needed to achieve this prestigious certification. There are requirements that can be found easily online, but as an Instructor that had delivered this course multiple times, I believe that there additional things the students must know before attending the course. Study: This is 2 weeks intensive program containing a lot of information to be covered and studying before the course is in mine opinion very good strategy if you want to make sure, that you will pass all exams. What we doing to assist our students is making online classes ( free of charge ) before the course where we give directions to the students how to prepare and what need to be covered so they come to us prepared and stress free. Driving abilities: You need to be confident behind the wheel. The license that you are going to receive will give you rights to command 200GT vessel, so you need to have some ship handling experience. The 5 days practical training are not enough to teach you from scratch. They are used to practice different techniques for berthing, anchoring, handling equipment failures, practicing drills etc. If you have doubts and want additional time for practicing your manoeuvring skills we can organize additional practical training with our training fleet a week before the start of the course. The minimum requirements: - Candidates should be 18 years of age or older - must hold or obtain a Marine Communications VHF-SRC Radio Operators certificate - must hold or obtain STCW basic safety certificate. This includes Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, Elementary First Aid, Personal Survival Techniques and Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting. If STCW Safety Training is taken after January 1, 2014, new Proficiency in Maritime Security Awareness (PMSA) is also required. - must have minimum of 50 days at sea - 3000 nautical miles covered, 1500 nautical miles of which must be on a power yacht bigger than 10m. - minimum 30 hours of night watch - A current medical fitness examination and a colour blindness eyesight examination, which allows the participant to safely perform the relevant duties on a yacht. During my time at sea, I have witnessed the expertise and efficiency of ABs as they deftly handle lines and equipment, ensuring that operations proceed smoothly and safely. One of the key responsibilities of an AB is watchkeeping. This involves maintaining a vigilant lookout for other vessels, navigational hazards, and any signs of distress or emergencies. Captain vs Chief Engineer: Fact About Their Responsibilities Following our last article on the difference between deck and engine department, most mariners reacted in Facebook comments by defining the captain vs chief engineer responsibilities. Some of the comments were as quote ” both departments play an important role onboard. The deck crew might look clean but they are the shock absorbers of companies inquiries, charterer, and clients demand. For short the master is the overall command because he is responsible for the overall responsibility of his ship” Amazing. Someone asked, ” Why to create unnecessary friction again?” Underestimated. Base on the above comments, you will find out that the first statement was knowledgeable to enlighten and support the article in promoting a clear view of both departments and not a friction. Now, to give an additional clear view about the topic and responsibilities of the heads ( the captain and chief engineer), as earlier said, both engine and deck departments are so amazing and will not function without each other. Captain and chief engineer responsibilities According to my experience, both officers have numerous responsibilities. The captain being owner representative and chief in command of the ship work to manage the ship safe navigation, oversee the loading and discharge of cargo or passengers, take responsibilities for the ship and her crews. In relation to that, the chief engineer being captains rank mate, by legal sense maintain his or her department autonomously. Also, he or she holds high responsibilities, to take care of all ship technical maintenance and repairs, maintain constant power supply onboard, cater for required spare parts through the owner or management to keep the ship operational, and as well manage engine crew team welfare. Having said that, in any operational functions, the captain always consultant chief engineer for both to agree on a common goal in other to archive the ship owners business arm. The major priority of these two top officers is to oversee the smooth, safe, and quality operations of the vessel across the ocean. However, it’s unfortunately, people’s minds and understanding sometimes maybe unique. In such cases, both leaders maintain distance from each other, which brings politic onboard ship. OBJECTIVE The main objective of this article is to keep the young marines professionals’ mind straight in the area of whose powers is higher than another. Respect and discipline are the keywords to manage any post. Be you, captain or chief engineer, the first thing to keep in mind is “you are just an employee” and the owner or management deserve the right to kick you out from his or her business at any time. Diving goes far beyond just knowing how to swim. It requires discipline, excellent health, courage, physical strength to manage the heavy equipment like the bailout cylinder and the dive hat (which is loaded with electrical components), and a sharp, intelligent mind to execute tasks under pressure. Even with all of this, there’s no guarantee of 100% safety during a dive. However, since the involvement of the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), diving risks have been reduced to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). Several safety measures now ensure the well-being of divers, such as: -Emergency Response Vessel (ERV) on site and within sight (<500m) before any diver enters the water. -A fully dressed standby diver and a standby Launch and Recovery System (LARS) ready to deploy in case of an emergency to rescue the diver. -Annual intensive medical assessments, required before any diver is admitted to a site. -On-site medical practitioner and decompression chamber for emergencies. Bailout gas supply in case of air supply failure. -Daily equipment checks by dive technicians, and divers performing thorough pre-dive inspections. -An HSE advisor on-site to supervise and advise on safety measures. These controls significantly improve the chances of a successful and safe operation. It’s important to recognize that diving is an inherently high-risk job, and the last reason anyone should consider entering this profession is for money. I’m grateful to report that during my recent project, we faced no emergencies, and everything proceeded as planned.
