Empowering Women: Inspiration from Harriet Tubman and Susan B. Anthony History is rich with women who defied the odds to reshape society. Harriet Tubman, known as "Moses," led over 70 enslaved people to freedom through the Underground Railroad and played a critical role in the Civil War as a scout, spy, and nurse. Her courage and unwavering commitment to justice inspire us to lead with bravery. Susan B. Anthony, a pioneer of the women’s suffrage movement, co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association and fought relentlessly for women’s right to vote. Her determination paved the way for equality and reminds us of the power of perseverance. Even today, challenges like gender pay gaps, underrepresentation in STEM, and limited leadership roles persist. A key barrier is the persistent expectation that women should assume the primary responsibility for raising children. While caregiving is a shared responsibility, traditional gender roles and workplace cultures often place this burden disproportionately on women, affecting their career growth and leadership opportunities. Equitable parental leave policies are critical to changing this narrative. By ensuring both parents have access to adequate, paid leave, we can normalize shared caregiving and allow women to participate fully in the workforce without being unfairly penalized. This creates not only a level playing field but also stronger, more balanced families and communities. To create a truly inclusive future, we must: Support diversity and representation in leadership and tech. Advocate for equitable policies like equal pay and opportunities. Amplify the voices of women driving change. History proves progress is possible with collective action. Thatcher's Real Impact on Women: Breaking Barriers But Ignoring Needs Margaret Thatcher, as the UK’s first female Prime Minister, left a significant but contentious legacy regarding women’s issues. Her ascent to power symbolized a breakthrough in gender barriers, demonstrating that women could hold the highest political office. However, her approach often lacked a focus on gender-specific policies that could have advanced women's rights and addressed systemic inequalities. Thatcher’s economic policies, emphasizing deregulation and privatization, created opportunities for female entrepreneurs but also led to welfare cuts and industrial restructuring. These changes disproportionately affected women, particularly those in lower-income brackets and single mothers, by reducing social support and causing job losses in female-dominated sectors. Additionally, her administration did not prioritize expanding childcare facilities or improving maternity and parental leave, which could have supported working mothers more effectively. Despite being a symbol of female leadership, Thatcher did not significantly advance the representation of women in her government or within the Conservative Party. She avoided aligning with the feminist movement and did not implement gender quotas or policies specifically aimed at increasing female political representation. Thatcher’s belief in meritocracy and individualism led her to focus on policies intended to benefit all citizens rather than addressing gender-specific issues. Organizations and groups can #InspireInclusion through action in areas such as: ♀ forging women's economic empowerment - opening doors for women and girls to access leadership, decision-making, business, and STEM ♀ making it possible for women and girls to make informed decisions about their health and keeping these decisions between them and their healthcare provider(s) ♀ providing women and girls with access to quality education and training ♀ supporting women with guaranteed paid parental leave, caregiving support, and access to safe reproductive healthcare ♀ creating policies that protect, uplift, and empower women and girls

Happy International Women's Day! We'd like to take the opportunity to celebrate all the inspirational women that form part of our team here at Hollins Homes. Recent data from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 2022, showed that women make up just 18% of the workforce in the built environment sector, with an even smaller percentage holding more senior roles. A lack of representation unfortunately deters young women from having the confidence to advance in a property related career, and thus reduces talent availability in our sector. International Women's Day is about more than just shouting your female colleague a coffee, it's about taking action to accelerate women's equality. At SCHF, women make up; 78% of our staff 87% of our Senior Leadership Team, and 71% of our Executive Leadership Team. Our female staff are friends, mothers, partners, siblings, daughters, grandmothers and more, and each of these roles often comes with different pressures and needs. That's why we are proud to take action today and every day to help level the playing field for women including; 🔹 Our Flexible Work (FLOW) policy, giving staff the freedom to work around appointments, school pickups or other schedules, 🔹 Employer-funded parental leave policy, for both primary and secondary carers, 🔹 An additional super contribution made for additional unpaid time taken as part of parental leave, and 🔹Our Work from Anywhere policy, because work doesn't only happen at the office, just like life doesn't only happen at home. To make a real impact, we need your support and are seeking to capture data via survey.📝  A key pillar of our strategy is to create accessible policies which we’ll be publishing so that businesses can shortcut their own routes to change. Our survey will gather data on topics directly affecting women, such as female health, parental leave, and caregiving. We encourage participation from all genders to ensure a well-rounded view, but the questions in the survey are mainly informed by evidence that 25% of women are more likely than men to experience gender-based discrimination at work (World Economic Forum, Global Gender Gap Report 2023). “When you are accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.” In the current wave of feminism and women’s empowerment, this often comes with an unspoken caveat: many men want to support women’s rights only to the extent that it doesn’t inconvenience their own comfort or privilege. Consider workplace dynamics: many employers advocate for paid maternity leave until it’s time to provide it to their female employees. Suddenly, concerns arise about time lost or perceived 'unproductiveness.' This reaction undermines the very support they claim to offer. So, how do we move forward? We can do this through intentional inclusivity and self-reflection. It’s essential to create environments where equality is not perceived as a threat but rather as a shared opportunity for growth and empowerment.
