Change is inevitable. College sports originated as a way to provide students a break from the demands of academics, then evolved into both a form of entertainment and a source of school pride. That was certainly the case at San Jacinto which earned a dozen national championships under three different mascots. In 2016; however, the Board of Trustees made the difficult decision to close all but two of the College’s athletic programs, citing changes in the Texas core curriculum, the cost of maintaining athletic facilities, and the shifting priorities of our students. Today, San Jacinto College is investing in fan side improvements to our ball fields at the North and South campuses. Why? Because Ravens’ ball is about more than our 59 student athletes. Beginning with the selection of Poe the Raven as a common mascot in 2022, San Jacinto is making a concerted effort to connect students, employees, and the community to both our storied past and a dynamic future. Improving the spectator experience can build attendance and a sense of student belonging that directly translates into improved success in their education goals. #StudentEngagement #RavensBall #ChangeManagement

Ben Portnoy delivered a robust and detailed look into the forward thinking proposal to end the madness with #collegefootball. Traditional thinking will deliver traditional results, which is a bad thing for the NCAA and status quo. While this proposal seems radical, I believe it has the best chance to provide guardrails for growth in the college sports atmosphere. #collegesports #collegeathletes #studentathlete #NIL #NILdeals #NILvaluation #recruiting #sportsbusiness #sportsbiz #sportslaw #sportslawyer #sportsconsultant #sportsadviser #sportsmanagement #sportsagent

The Future of Collegiate Athletics and Student-Athletes The upcoming House settlement, set for Spring 2025, could bring major shifts to college athletics, particularly for smaller sports programs. A key issue: roster spots. With roster spots now tied to full scholarships and NIL earnings, 19 of 43 NCAA sports may see cuts to team sizes. While these changes aim to support student-athletes, they raise critical questions: *Will roster spots become annual contracts instead of 4-year commitments? *Can athletes lose their spots or owe money if performance falls short? *How will this impact recruiting, particularly for high school athletes? These challenges highlight the importance of education and protection for student-athletes as they navigate new contract landscapes. The Player Protection Program provides the guidance they need—ensuring athletes fully understand their commitments while helping universities create clear, enforceable agreements. As the college sports landscape evolves, we’re here to protect student-athletes and support institutions. #NIL #StudentAthletes #PlayerProtectionProgram #EducateProtect

https://lnkd.in/gAJf4SSH This was written a few days ago..I agree with some of it..Syracuse, Kentucky, Ohio State, Michigan State, North Carolina, N.C. State, Indiana, and Kentucky have the biggest venues used for college basketball games, but are they the most suited for college basketball fans and the college basketball culture..Some of the smaller arenas at Duke, Penn, and Butler have that old prestige and old school feel of college basketball and don't have the luxury suites..Some players like when the fans are near the court to cheer them on..Some arenas are not built that way..Some arenas are built to host hockey games and concerts and not just for basketball..The dimensions and feel for a hockey game is different than basketball..#eventmanagement #facilitymanagement #sportbusiness #marketing #hospitality 🏀 🗑 💺 🏟 📣 🆚 🏚 🏫

Big news for Ohio’s student-athletes! Governor Mike DeWine signed an executive order allowing Ohio colleges and universities to directly compensate student-athletes for their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights. This step ensures Ohio remains competitive as other states adopt similar measures and aligns with the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics. While state funds won’t be used, this move reinforces Ohio’s commitment to fairness and opportunity for student-athletes. Be on the lookout to see how this shapes the future of sports in Ohio!
