Can keeping eye contact and being connected with someone in a moment of stammering be a shared thing of beauty? Gareth Walkom @withVR thinks it can… Gareth spoke powerfully at the National Stammering Clinical Excellence Network Study Day last week about his journey to move towards not just accepting his stammer but seeing this as beautiful. Along with the poet Stephen Greene @the_stutterverse and artist Willemijn @juststutter, a compelling case was made to reposition stammering as a valuable way of speaking. It was fantastic to have their voices heard during this packed and informative day about using the social model of disability to inform how we, as a Speech and Language Therapists, work with people who stammer. Stammering has a neurological basis but is much more than the surface struggle and the repetitions, prolongations and blocking on sounds that we might observe. It often involves hidden feelings of shame and embarrassment and involves elaborate attempts to avoid stammering through not saying certain words and sounds, restructuring sentences to try to prevent a stammer occurring and not engaging in social and work situations for fear of negative reactions to stammering from others. This all takes it toll and often holds people back from achieving what they aspire to and living the full lives they wish for. We, as individuals and employers, all have a responsibility to ensure that we create an environment that allows people who stammer to talk freely, openly and authentically, with their stammer acknowledged as being a part of their identity to be embraced and not concealed. Gareth is a fantastic example of someone doing just that. It was really exciting to hear about the work he is doing with his company, withVR ( https://hello.withvr.app/). He has created software for use with a VR headset that can be used by Speech and Language Therapists working with people who stammer to allow them to go into virtual situations, such as a café or work rest room, to practice communicating, stammering openly and saying what they want to say without avoidance in preparation for doing just this in the real world. #Stuttering #Stammering #StammeringTherapy #StutteringTherapy #SpeechTherapy

Today is Star Trek Day 2024—on September 8th, 1966, Star Trek first aired on the small screen in the United States. Now, I know many of you will remind me I'm getting old and probably used to watch it on my black-and-white tele (1982 baby, thank you), but Trek has played a huge part in my life, and for one day a year, geek Jon gets to post all about it on social media (just wait until you see the planned TikTok). Here are a few things you might not know about Star Trek. The First Interracial Kiss: In 1968, the episode "Plato's Stepchildren" depicted the first interracial kiss on U.S. television between Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), breaking racial boundaries in media. Mobile Phones: Martin Cooper, the inventor of the mobile phone, cited the communicators used in "Star Trek" as part of his inspiration. NASA and Star Trek: The show inspired many scientists and engineers to pursue careers in space exploration. NASA even named one of its space shuttles "Enterprise" after the Star Trek ship, following a campaign by fans. The "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode titled "The High Ground" (Season 3, Episode 12), originally aired in 1990, was banned by the BBC in the UK due to its politically sensitive content. A significant reason for the ban was a line in the episode where Data mentions that Ireland was unified in 2024 after a successful terrorist campaign. This was during a period when the real-world conflict in Northern Ireland, known as "The Troubles," was still ongoing. Given the sensitivity of the topic in the UK at the time, the BBC decided not to air the episode. If you look around the Delivered Social offices, you'll find plenty of examples of Trek everywhere, including No1's dog tag from Star Trek Picard.
