Is this the best advert of 2024? Where Jaguar fails, a funky pigeon succeeds. I've been working in advertising for fifteen years, and even I mute the TV when the ads come on. But this is an ad I actually enjoy. Here's why I think it's effective. 1. It's quirky, light, and fun. It combines surprise with happiness - the most effective combination, facial coding research has told me. 2. It's relevant. They're pigeons. They're funky. It's FunkyPigeon.com. There's no heavy-handed "purpose" (groan) - their purpose is greeting cards and it shows. 3. It's well branded. The pigeons are strong distinctive assets that will stick in your head. Look, it's not going to win a Cannes Lion - but Jaguar's latest ad probably would, and we'll see which does better. Good ads should be relevant, distinctive, and enjoyable.
