This week, we are reflecting on one of Haverstock's previous projects, Linden Farm. Completed in 2020, Linden Farm was designed to address the lack of independent living options available for autistic adults. Across the UK, young autistic adults are often given little agency in choosing where to live, frequently having to move several hours away from their families due to the limited facilities available. Recognising this gap, a Surrey family established The Simon Trust to fundraise for the creation of an alternative model of accommodation. In a pioneering partnership with Surrey County Council, Haverstock was brought on board to create a design that put residents’ needs and preferences first. The result is this innovative 10-bed supported living development that celebrates its rural setting. Our design anchors the homes to their surroundings through the integration of rich horticultural elements and a sensory garden framework. Perpetuating a sense of calm and well-being through the reduction of visual ‘noise’ with natural materials, fostering a domestic atmosphere. Linden Farm provides a safe and welcoming home that is integrated into the local community. Enabling families to stay connected, this environment is ideal for those with neurodiverse conditions, establishing a benchmark for autistic adult provisions. Featured in the Architects Journal, RIBAJ and The Guardian, Linden Farm’s importance as a pioneering project in supported living design is clear.
