Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup... unless you're a magician, and even then, it's just an illusion So, here are some 'frugal' tips to deal with clients who think money grows on trees (but only for them): 1. Charge by the sigh. 2. Invoice for 'emotional labor' (aka, the therapy sessions you need after dealing with them.) 3. Implement the "3-question rule": If they ask more than 3 questions outside of scope, it's billable time! Or, you know, just have an open and honest conversation about your worth. How much is your client's case worth? It's a question that's difficult to answer, and one that different lawyers will answer differently. At our firm, we tend to value cases higher than most others in our field and treat every case as if it's going to trial. This is part of our business model of working cases up to their maximum potential. However, this approach means we can't help everyone in need. Other law firms settle pre-suit for less value and less time expended on the case. There's always a trade-off between maximum value and reaching a resolution quickly with less resistance.
