March 12, 2024 was World Glaucoma Day under the theme 'UNITING FOR A GLAUCOMA-FREE WORLD'. Glaucoma: a disease of the optic nerve of the eye. There are many types. Glaucoma is a chronic, progressive degeneration of the optic nerve, resulting in lost of the peripheral vision, followed by lost of central vision. It is the leading cause of irreversible blindness, It is the second leading cause of blindness. Risks: Aging, black race, family history of Glaucoma, elevated eye pressure. It cannot be cured but can be controlled , It is mostly diagnosed on routine eye examination. Treatment: lowering eye pressure with eyedrops and or surgery, regular follow-up appointments with eye doctor. Recommendations: Regular eye examination from age 35. Use medications as prescribed Keep follow-up eye appointments. THE WORLD IS BRIGHT, SAVE YOUR SIGHT

3-column fractures in the ankylosed spine are extremely unstable, and can pose a risk of neurological injury if they become displaced. These injuries can also be subtle on imaging, and may occur after reasonably low-energy trauma. When treating trauma patients with AS/DISH it is critical that you maintain a high index of suspicion for unstable fracture. This lovely 55-yo-female sustained a ground level fall with an extension-type mechanism, and subsequently presented with excruciating, axial pain in the upper lumbar spine. Imaging demonstrated 3-column injury at L1-2, and she was taken for operative stabilization. One year out from surgery, the patient is doing great, with minimal pain, and return to pre-injury level of function. (shared with patient permission) #spinesurgery #orthopaedics #trauma #patientcare

The Kyphobrace is a specialized brace designed to treat spinal conditions like hyperkyphosis (an excessive forward curvature of the thoracic spine). Some of the key benefits include: 1. **Posture Correction**: It helps realign the spine by encouraging a more upright posture, which can prevent the progression of kyphosis. 2. **Pain Relief**: By reducing the forward curvature, the Kyphobrace can alleviate back pain and discomfort caused by the misalignment of the spine. 3. **Non-Surgical Solution**: For mild to moderate kyphosis, it can serve as a non-invasive alternative to surgery, reducing the need for more aggressive treatments. 4. **Spine Support**: The brace provides support to the thoracic spine, which can help reduce strain on surrounding muscles and ligaments, allowing them to heal. 5. **Improved Mobility**: By correcting posture and reducing pain, the brace can help patients move more comfortably and with greater ease. 6. **Enhanced Aesthetics**: For people with visible spinal curvature, it can improve physical appearance by promoting a more natural posture. 7. **Prevention of Further Deformity**: By stabilizing the spine, it can prevent the kyphotic curve from worsening over time. 8. **Customization**: Kyphobraces are customized to fit the patient, ensuring better comfort and effectiveness. #bethesdaspineandposture #kyphosis #kyphobrace #bethesdaMD

When Should You Consider Spine Surgery? If conservative treatments like physical therapy, steroid injections, nerve blocks, NSAIDs, and lifestyle changes haven't provided relief, it might be time to consider spine surgery. Surgery might also be necessary in emergencies following trauma, like a car accident, or when chronic conditions worsen, leading to “red flag” symptoms such as: 🔹 Loss of bladder or bowel control 🔹 Severe pain 🔹 Numbness or loss of sensation in the lower extremities 🔹 Unexplained weight loss 🔹 Night sweats or fever Spine surgery is often a last resort, but it can be the best option to address the root cause of your pain, eliminating the uncertainty of whether conservative treatments will work. If you're experiencing persistent pain, consult with our specialists at Premier Brain & Spine to explore if spine surgery is right for you. #Premierbrainandspine #SpineSurgery #PainManagement #ChronicPain #HealthcareExcellence #BackPain #SpineHealth

It appears there might be a typographical error in your question. Did you mean "glaucoma"? If so, glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, typically due to increased pressure within the eye. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness. There are different types of glaucoma, and it is often associated with elevated intraocular pressure. Regular eye examinations are crucial for early detection and management of glaucoma, as symptoms may not be noticeable until the condition has progressed. Treatment options may include prescription eye drops, oral medications, laser therapy, or surgery, depending on the severity of the condition. If you have concerns about your eye health or are experiencing changes in your vision, it is essential to consult with an eye care professional for a thorough examination and appropriate guidance. #Glaucoma #EyeHealth #VisionLoss #EyeCare #Optometry #Ophthalmology #PreventBlindness #EyeDisease #RaiseAwareness #HealthyEyes #SeeClearly #EyeConditions #OpenAngleGlaucoma #ClosedAngleGlaucoma #VisionCare #EyeCheckup

👁️ What You Should Know About Glaucoma 👁️ The image shows an example of how vision can be affected by glaucoma, with blurred and narrowed fields of view. Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can cause irreversible damage to the optic nerve, leading to vision loss or even blindness. It’s often called the "silent thief of sight" because it typically progresses without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred. The good news? Early detection through regular eye exams can help protect your vision! If caught early, glaucoma can be managed with medications or surgery to slow its progression. Protect your sight—schedule an eye exam today and spread the word about the importance of glaucoma awareness. Together, we can prevent vision loss! 💙 #GlaucomaAwareness #EyeHealth #stlb #VisionLoss #VisuallyImpaired #CorpusChristi #Lighthousefortheblind

A posterior repair, also known as a posterior colporrhaphy, is a surgical procedure to repair or reinforce the fascial support layer between the rectum and the vagina. A perineorrhaphy is the term used for the operation that repairs the perineal body. The perineal body (the supporting tissue between vaginal and anal openings) also helps to support the back wall of the vagina. The perineum is the area that is often damaged when tears or episiotomies occur during childbirth. This area may need to be repaired along with the back wall of the vagina to give perineal support and in some cases reduce the vaginal opening. About 1 in 10 women require surgery for vaginal prolapse. A prolapse of the back (posterior) wall of the vagina is usually due to a weakness in the strong tissue layer (fascia) that divides the vagina from the lower part of the bowel (rectum). This weakness may cause difficulty when passing a bowel movement, a feeling of fullness or dragging in the vagina or an uncomfortable bulge that may extend beyond the vaginal opening. Other names for the weakness of the back wall of the vagina include rectocele and enterocele. Spine surgery involves surgical procedures to treat issues related to the spine, such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease. The goal is to relieve pain, restore function, and improve quality of life. Common types of spine surgeries include discectomy (removal of a damaged disc), laminectomy (removal of part of the vertebra to relieve pressure), and spinal fusion (joining two or more vertebrae to stabilize the spine). The surgery is usually considered when conservative treatments like physical therapy and medication haven’t provided relief. Recovery times can vary, and a tailored rehabilitation plan is often necessary to regain strength and mobility. Ablation and excision are two surgical procedures, with similar definition but with different outcomes. Whilst the former subjects patients to incomplete surgeries due to burning the surface of lesions only, the latter has been so far the only treatment options that removes lesions from their roots. However, despite these big and important differences for patients, ablation is still heavily performed. In most of these cases, the disease will progress and the patient will most likely have another surgery. This is a case of a patient who travelled to our centre from another country. Prior to this the said patient had ablation surgery done in her country. Needless to say that there was no improvement in symptoms. Another important aspect of this case was the presence of endometriomas. In a large number of cases, endometriosis comes with deep infiltrating endometriosis, which can include bowel endometriosis. Our patient had not one, but 3 bowel nodules and she needed a bowel resection. Dr Kyriakopoulos: “During surgery we removed a large part of her sigmoid-rectum. The most interesting is that she had 3 full thickness nodules (the lowest was 5 cm from the anal verge) and the middle one was causing almost obstruction of the bowel. She had another one just a couple of cm above that”. #endometriosisbowel #bowelendometriosis #die #endometriosisofthebowel #drdinos #ace #endometriosisspecialist #excision
