Today I was lucky enough to be invited into our son’s school for a career fair. I got to spend time with young people in year 8, 10 and 11. I talked about accountancy as a career, how great apprenticeships are but also entrepreneurship. What it means and where to start. It was great to hear how many of them wanted to start their own business, most didn’t know what in but it’s a start! 🚨 CALLING ALL SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND STUDENTS THAT STUDY A LEVEL ECONOMICS 🚨 We are running the biggest careers fair for A level Economic students in the Midlands. The biggest issue I found as a student was attending career fairs and leaving with a pile of paper and not being any clearer on what path I wanted to take. So, Econominds is putting together a careers fair that is opportunity-only focused. Meaning, students can leave with: 1. Access to exclusive school leaver opportunities and actually signed up for the next steps 2. Chance to speak to A* A level students in the Econominds community 3. Hear from experts in the field to understand what new skills you need due to AI 4. A CHANCE OF WINNING A PRIZE WORTH OVER £10,000 "Sounds too good to be true, there must be a catch." Nope, just that you must come with a parent or guardian because we want to educate parents on the new job landscape that exists too, because it is different to theirs. 🌟 Yesterday, the iCan Career Fair gave our team a chance to connect with local young people, parents, and carers, helping to navigate the exciting (and sometimes challenging) transition from school to further education or employment. 💡 What the Event Was About Designed to support young people in East Sussex facing barriers to employment, this inclusive event provided tailored guidance to explore career paths, training programs, and accessible opportunities. 💼 At Roadways, we take pride in supporting initiatives like these. Here's how we contributed: 1️⃣ Showcasing Opportunities: Our team shared career paths, apprenticeships, and supported employment options, highlighting how anyone can thrive in the highways industry with the right support. 2️⃣ Interactive Minecraft Sessions: Alan and I conducted fun, hands-on sessions that engaged attendees and brought our industry to life in a creative and accessible way. 3️⃣ PPE Booth: We showcased the tools of the trade and the importance of safety in the workplace—an essential aspect of any career in highways. 💬 "We believe in creating opportunities for everyone, regardless of the challenges they face. Events like iCan are crucial in bridging the gap between education and employment." While attendance was lower than anticipated, the engagement and enthusiasm of those who attended made it all worthwhile. Roadways is proud to be part of a community dedicated to empowering young people to explore their potential. Thank you to the organisers, attendees, and everyone who stopped by our stands. Adult learners mostly attend college with the goal of achieving a better career, aiming for improved prospects for themselves and their families. Colleges that actively support these learners in reaching their career aspirations from day one are positioned for success. Apprenticeship programs are by far the most effective training programs available. The reason why I highly endorse this type of program is... 1. businesses or organizations hold robust training programs to teach critical knowledge for success in roles 2. businesses or organizations then offer on the job training to give apprentices the opportunity to apply the knowledge they gained to work 3. apprentices are paired with mentors (peers or supervisors) to ensure that they understand the work requirements for their jobs; they become independent and empowered to drive value for their employers.
