High School Opportunity 📢 The Institute of Arctic Studies at Dartmouth College facilitates a polar science program for U.S. students called the Joint Science Education Project (JSEP). JSEP offers two experiences: 1) a one-week remote summer program for high school students and 2) a three-week field-based program in Greenland for recent high school graduates (18+). Both offer experiences through which students learn about the science and engineering in the Arctic while developing research and communication skills. JSEP is interdisciplinary and cross-cultural. Students in the field program will receive a stipend of $1500 to offset costs of any necessary gear (such as hiking boots), passports, and to cover 3-4 weeks of full-time engagement with JSEP. All other travel expenses are covered. Students in the remote program will need access to a computer or tablet and reliable internet. All required research materials will be mailed to students ahead of time. Applications are due 1/31/2025! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eD5pJ4nc Share! In July 2023, #SJSU and the City of San José signed a university organization agreement (UOA) that allows students to intern with the city for academic credit. This is the first time that the university has had a blanket agreement across all departments in the city. Today, the city has about 100 interns — and a vast majority are Spartans. Read how a growing partnership between the city and the university is creating hands-on learning opportunities in the latest issue of #SJSUWSQ: https://ow.ly/K0wy50RhEXg

The PACE program is offered at MILLER CAREER & TECHNOLOGY CENTER in the Katy Independent School District. The acronym stands for Professional Advancement through Career Education. PACE is a competitive course offered to graduating seniors only, which has gained popularity over the last few years. PACE students must have a GPA of 3.8 or higher to apply – in other words, high achievers drawing the top students from across the district. During the present 2023 – 2024 school year, R.G. Miller | DCCM partnered with PACE, by providing a 17-week internship for graduating senior Nicholas Ding. Nicholas, a student at Seven Lakes High School worked with various members of our engineering teams under the guidance of R.G. Miller’s President, Mark Gehringer, PE, Chief Executive Officer, Jack Miller, P.E., and Vice President of Development Operations, Caleb Stone. It was an ideal partnership as Nicholas learned first-hand about the industry and multitude of projects currently under development in and around the Houston metropolitan area. Being guided by several of our industry’s most knowledgeable mentors, Nicholas gained hands-on experience in a professional workplace environment, attended learning sessions, participated in daily team meetings, and earned honors credit with PACE. Nicholas plans to attend Texas A&M University in the fall with an engineering major. #RGMiller #DCCM #DesignDevelopGrow #sevenlakeshighschool #paceprogram #katyisd #ATM #CivilEngineering #LandDevelopment #SiteDevelopment #Engineering #Development #Engineers #PublicWorks #Sustainability #Hydrology #Transportation #GIS #WaterResources #Water #Wastewater #WaterInfrastructure

Walking up the academic ladder requires a personal commitment and resolution before anything else, because taking the horse to the river is one thing, and the horse choosing to drink is another. My appreciation of this experience is attributable to the enlightenment, shaping of my personal perspectives of different and varying subjects. As it was once said that if your education doesn't allow you to appreciate issues above ethnic, religious, and political coloration, your education is meaningless, I understand this better than anyone else. I have proven in all respects that I listen more, and I'm a doer, and a go-getter which earned me the nickname "Ollennu"- and thanks to the (human) resources available at the Department of Real Estate of the SDD University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, Wa and all those I have encountered on campus, or even during the voluntary and compulsory internships I gladly undertook over the last 4-years. My graduation 🎓 on the 22nd day of November, 2024 as a Bsc. in Real Estate student did not surprised me or any who knew me, it was a beautiful learning curve where community engagement is a requirement for the award of the said degree under the University's Third Trimester Field Practical Program. I will forever be indebted to my lecturers, supervisors, roommates, friends, and study group members for their sense of generosity in knowledge sharing experience. Experiences that were full of lessons (bitter and pleasurable alike) After graduation what's next? Next is to vigorously continue on a personal development agenda through positive impacting of society in various ways that the universe aligns, understanding that little things in continuous manner is better than "unsustainably great" leaps, and not seeking to be perfect, but rather just a little better than yesterday. The rest shall fall in their place, rightfully. The choice is either the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.....the former

Case study: "Delivering community benefits from nature restoration work" - Scottish Land Commission x Alys Daniels-Creasey ECCI’s NERC: Natural Environment Research Council Consultancy Programme connects organisations with a PhD student to undertake meaningful research projects connected to climate change - part of The University of Edinburgh's E4 Doctoral Training Partnership. A total of 10 internships were successfully delivered in 2023/24, matching PhD candidates with a range of partners in NERC priority areas. One such partner was the Scottish Land Commission - a public body funded by the Scottish Government that seeks to create a Scotland where land is owned and used in ways that are fair, responsible and productive. SLC was matched with Alys Daniels-Creasey, a PhD student at the University of Edinburgh, who has a background in social sciences and is interested in the local community implications of natural capital markets and environmental/land use decision-making in Scotland. The aim of the placement was to design and conduct interviews and write a summary report on community benefits from nature restoration projects within the Cairngorms National Park. The research sought to understand what participants perceive to be the key community benefits currently delivered by their work, and what they feel are the drivers and constraints related to this. P-TECH 9-14 students signed up for dual enrollment programs at higher rates, attempting and earning more college credits than the comparison group students by the end of four years in high school". MDRC October 2023 P-TECH 9-14 Pathways to Success Implementation, Impact, and Cost Findings from the New York City P-TECH 9-14 Schools Evaluation New findings in this report indicate that the P-TECH model increased students' postsecondary degree completion, particularly for male students, and boosted internship and dual enrollment rates, even during the pandemic. "By the end of the first year of postsecondary education, 2.6 percent of female and 1.8 percent of male P-TECH 9-14 students had earned degrees, compared with virtually no students from the comparison group, of either gender. These impacts for both genders are statistically significant". My recent visit to Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, was eye-opening. We met with the Dean of Undergraduate Admissions who told us that their peer institutions are WPI and RPI. The biggest difference is Stevens' location, a stone's throw from Manhattan internships and coops. Amen! And who wouldn't want to be in Hoboken, a really hip and vibrant city just outside NYC? I was impressed with so much that I heard here. There are just over 4000 undergraduates, which I think is a sweet spot. Lest you think these are all techy nerds, there are 23 D3 sports teams and 20 performing arts groups. There's a new core curriculum which is very hands-on and tech-centric, and a coop program is available for engineering and computer science majors. Students can live on campus while working full-time in those coops or summer internships; NYC is so close that students have opportunities on their doorstep. The most popular major among applicants is mechanical and undecided engineering, but the most popular single program is computer science. And there are 12 different majors within the Engineering department, including Naval, Optical, Software, and Industrial and Systems Engineering. A new major here is Quantitative Social Science, a combination of sociology, technology, and data analytics. How cool is that? For admission, calculus and physics are crucial. Students without calculus can be admitted conditionally, but students without calculus or physics must take one or both the summer before matriculating. At $84K, the price tag is high, but merit scholarships start at $10K and go up to full tuition. The president's strategic plan includes doubling the number of applications in 10 years, effectively reducing their acceptance rate in half (currently 41-44%), while increasing full-time, high-quality faculty. I see no reason why that shouldn't happen. This school is a gem and should be on the rise. #Stevens #collegeplanning #collegecounseling

Getting into a top-tier graduate program doesn't make you successful. Getting into a top-tier research lab doesn't make you successful. Publishing your research in top-tier journals doesn't make you successful. Having top-tier connections in your industry doesn't make you successful. Having a top-tier mindset makes you successful. Whether given all the resources in the world or very little, your mindset is a passport to all the places you want to go, a mirror that shows you who you want to be, and a road map that will show you the way. Have a positive mindset, fake it 'til you make it, and you will make it.
