As we celebrate International Women’s month, let's recognise how far we have come in improving healthcare for all women while acknowledging the disparities minority women still face. According to the Health&Care Professions Council Diversity Data Report 2021, only 34% of managerial roles in the healthcare industry are held by minority communities, emphasising the immense need for diverse perspectives in decision-making in women’s health. This is especially crucial as a 2021 European study found that female migrants have a 60% higher chance of needing and not having access to healthcare services, highlighing how crucial inclusive healthcare is. What’s more, during 2018-2020, a study found that maternal mortality was 3.7x higher within the black communities and 1.7x higher in Asian communities when compared to white communities. Expanding healthcare access to hidden communities, providing culturally sensitive care, and diversifying the healthcare workforce has never been more important. Let's also remember that there is still a lot of work to be done to advance Women's Rights in #healthcare... and an onus on women leaders in healthcare to be advocates and leader toward health equity. On this International Women's Day, let's take a moment to reflect on the crucial strides needed to promote women's rights in healthcare and address gender inequalities prevalent in medical science and patient care. 💜 In 2020, Angela H.E.M. Maas wrote an insightful article published in Maturitas (2020 Jun; 136: 22–24) called "Empower Women in Healthcare to move Women’s Health forward." Maas emphasizes that historically, medical science and patient care have predominantly focused on male patients, leading to delayed and sometimes misdiagnosed health issues in women. Her research findings indicate that despite women living longer, they experience more unhealthy years due to barriers in accessing quality healthcare services. Socio-cultural factors further compound these challenges, impacting women's health, wellbeing, and disease outcomes differently than men. Moreover, Maas underscores the disproportionate burden of non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular diseases (CVD) on women, exacerbated by gender disparities in healthcare access and treatment. The article stresses the importance of gender equality and equal rights for women in healthcare leadership positions to address these disparities effectively. By empowering women in healthcare and recognizing the value of female values such as creativity, empathy, and mutual connection, we can elevate women's health on the global agenda. Did you know that female patients are significantly more likely to be misdiagnosed than male? Gender has often been omitted as a parameter in medical and health research, including in drug development. On September 10th and 11th, we are convening a virtual Nature conference on the topic of "Breaking Barriers for Gender and Health Equity". This conference is the second in the series of Breaking Barriers Nature conferences. The first one, in 2022, focused on the general topic of gender equity and gathered more than 1,600 participants from across the globe. The conference is free to register and will cover various aspects of how gender and health equity intersect. During the event, participants will have the opportunity to participate in a bespoke mentoring scheme, where they will be matched depending on their interests, needs and whether they want to be a mentor or a mentee. Particular care has been given to drawing links between research, policy and practice. The selection of speakers and panellists has been curated by in-house editors from Nature, Nature Medicine, Scientific American and other Springer Nature Group journal and book editors. The event is co-organised by the Springer Nature SDG 5 and SDG 3 working groups and supported by the Springer Nature Women Employee Network. Within the sphere of global health, leadership remains predominantly male-centric, with 69% of global health organizations led by men and a striking 80% of board chairs being male.
