NCACE Blog Community Innovation Practitioners: Fostering a Community of Practice Our blog this month features some of the key findings from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Community Innovation Practitioners (CIP) pilot programme. In a rapidly evolving world, the ability of cross-sector partners to share knowledge and collaborate effectively is essential for driving innovation and change. Communities of practice - groups of people who share a common interest or field of expertise - play a vital role in facilitating co-creation, knowledge exchange and fostering a sense of belonging. By providing a platform for individuals to connect, learn from one another, and develop shared skills, communities of practice can empower individuals and organisations to discover untapped knowledge, identify common challenges and opportunities, and realise their goals. It's been a busy week with the university's very first Policy Week! It's been really interesting to learn more about how the work that we do here at Leeds Beckett University, is making a real difference to the lives of people in our region and beyond with research conducted by colleagues influencing policy which impacts each and every one of you reading this - whether it be matters such as healthcare, transport, employment or the environment. Having attended a few events this week, key messages which have run throughout include : ⭐ Knowledge Exchange is key... As Fiona Bolam from Leeds City Council said "We need credible evidence." That's where Knowledge Exchange can help. Knowledge Exchange is a two way process where people and organisations exchange information, research, insight and expertise to enhance knowledge and how it is applied to create economic impact and benefit to society. Our research, expertise, innovation and partnerships support significantly. ⭐ We need to work together... Connecting evidence into policymaking requires wide-reaching collaboration within and across institutions, and sectors. Felix Kumi-Ampofo highlighted partnerships between West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Y-PERN, Health Innovation Leeds and Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnerships as good practice, connecting academia with wider society and making things happen. ⭐ "Everyone is creative..." Helen Pheby PhD Creativity isn't limited to the creative sector. Creativity is needed for policy making, different ways of thinking and different perspectives bring solutions. As David Hopes said "There is great commonality between art and business. You're identifying an idea and sharing it with the world." ⭐We all share the same vision... Anchor institutions such as Leeds Beckett University are 'rooted in place', whose long-term sustainability is tied to the wellbeing of the populations we serve. We have an important role to play to help foster economic wellbeing and social cohesion, for our students, for our staff and the wider community, and we want the best for our region, just like our partners. Huge well done to The Knowledge Exchange (TKE) at Leeds Beckett University for delivering a brilliant week of events, as always! 🌍 Exciting News! 🌍 The G4 Alliance formalized a partnership with Project ECHO on a Virtual Community of Practice supporting our Operative Encounter Registry initiative! This exciting collaboration is another step towards fulfilling our mission to improve surgical care in low—and middle-income countries. Using Project ECHO's peer-to-peer learning model, we will engage a global community of health professionals who will gain access via a virtual platform to share learning and improvement ideas and some case examples to improve surgical care. The Operative Encounter Registry will allow healthcare providers to collect, analyze, and utilize data for improved surgical care to strengthen health systems in low—and middle-income countries. As Claudio Tanca, Executive Director of the G4 Alliance, said: "This partnership represents another step towards improving surgical care for all, particularly in low-resource settings. With Project ECHO, we see the opportunity to build a virtual community of practice that supports health providers with skills and competencies to support quality care for their patients." The G4 Alliance is excited to partake in this international collaboration and capacity-building undertaking. Celebrating 5 years of research on social care innovation 🌟 On 2 October 2024, the Supporting Adult Social Care Innovation (SASCI) project, led by CPEC's Dr Juliette Malley, marked its five-year journey with an event that brought together social care innovators, researchers, policymakers, and people with lived experience. The event reflected on the project's findings and charted the path forward for innovation in adult social care. Over the last five years, SASCI, a collaborative effort between CPEC at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), King's College London, and the University of York, tackled a key challenge: why do innovations in adult social care struggle to sustain, scale, and spread? 🔍 The research, funded by the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, aimed to identify pathways to sustainable innovation that can improve lives. 💡 During the event, Dr. Malley used the metaphor of innovation as a river, filled with rocks (barriers), headwinds, and thunderstorms, illustrating that while the journey is challenging, it's possible to navigate through collaboration, co-production, and adaptive strategies. Panel discussions highlighted the role of leadership and empowering those receiving care, while breakout sessions explored how to overcome financial constraints and foster an inclusive innovation community. 💛 As we look to the future, one thing is clear: innovation in social care must be driven by human-centered approaches, collaboration, and a commitment to continuous learning. The SASCI project has laid the foundation for a resilient network of social care innovators—now it's time to build on that momentum. Key takeaway: Innovation is a collaborative and unpredictable journey, but together we can foster meaningful change. Congratulations to Professor Dennis Petrie (Centre for Health Economics - Monash Business School) and the entire team for their successful bid to establish a new $3m Centre of Research Excellence in Achieving Health Equity for All People with Disabilities (AHEAD), funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). AHEAD envisions a world where disability-inclusive research generates new evidence-based solutions that dismantle barriers and open new opportunities to ensure health equity is an enduring reality for all people with disabilities. AHEAD will enhance health equity by implementing sustainable, co-designed solutions that address the social determinants of health for people with disabilities and are shaped through our expanded research capacity and new innovative research infrastructure. 🌟An inspiring week for change at the CREATE Foundation Conference in Adelaide, where our National Program Director, Cameron Burgess, heard from and joined forces with young voices from across Australia 📢 CREATE champions youth voices and a pivotal belief: for the 44,000 young Australians growing up in care, meaningful improvements demand a partnership with those who have lived it. This year’s conference theme, ‘Your Stories. Stronger Together,’ brought this vision to life, emphasising the power of individual journeys in shaping a collective future. Voices in Action. The Voices in Action conference was more than an event; it was a movement. Bringing together young people, carers, and professionals, it provided an in-depth exploration of the care system through the eyes of its most important stakeholders – the children and young people themselves. Cameron had the opportunity to hear from so many of our young people and discuss finding meaning in adversity, encouraging us all to use our stories as a catalyst for change and to stand together in solidarity. It was also a joy to hear and see the positive support and advocacy of Amanda Rishworth Helen Connolly Liana Buchanan Jodie Griffiths-Cook Natalie Lewis Leanne McLean Katrine Hildyard MP Jackie Bray Jacqueline M. Registration Open for Day Symposium We are delighted to announce that the Voluntary Sector Studies Network, Volunteer Now, NICVA, ARK, Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University are to jointly host a symposium to explore pathways to collaborating on voluntary and community sector (VCS) research in Northern Ireland. This free event will be held on the 25th June thanks to support from  NICVA, WISERD and Queen’s University Belfast. Online registration is required before Friday, 21 June 2024, 12:00. Research within and about the voluntary and community sector springs up in many different settings and across a range of disciplines. Some of the challenges faced by academic and voluntary and community sector colleagues in Northern Ireland are how to retain past expertise on voluntary and community sector research, how to collate existing knowledge and how to connect with others interested in voluntary and community sector centred research. Key Aims of this Event will be: 1. To strengthen sustainable relationships between academic researchers and practitioners in the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland. 2. To recognise and map out the breadth of multi-disciplinary approaches to voluntary and community sector research in differing fields across the voluntary and community sector, such as health and social care, community development, youth, environment, arts, equality, employment, sports, social enterprise, housing, and social policy. 3. To consider models of Voluntary Sector Research Partnerships. 4. To identify gaps and inform a future research agenda for Voluntary and Community Sector Research in Northern Ireland. Format for the Event  The day conference will be a facilitated event, aiming to promote dialogue between academics and voluntary sector practitioners from a broad range of civil society organisations, recognising their dual expertise and drawing on inclusive and participative involvement methods.“Minds shall be open, conversations shall be kind, and different knowledges shall have equal value” (Locke and Grotz, 2022, p:191).[1] The conference event will begin by setting the scene to understand why it is important to bring together the breadth of key players engaging in voluntary and community sector centred research in Northern Ireland. Attendees will hear about the breadth of collaborative research between the sector and academia already happening in Northern Ireland. The afternoons session will include the opportunity to learn about how such research might be funded and resourced in the future and to attend a panel session on key lessons for strengthening such collaborative research. This will be followed by the opportunity to learn about the range of voluntary sector research partnerships in other parts of the UK, and to forge plans for future developments of collaborative working.
