Did you know that 2.5 million Ontarians currently do not have access to a family physician? This alarming shortage is impacting communities across the province, but it’s hitting the most vulnerable the hardest. In Niagara, the situation is even more dire. A staggering estimated 73,000 - 125,000 people in our region alone lack a family doctor. That’s 13% higher than the provincial average of 17%. These numbers are projected to rise, deepening the healthcare crisis in our community. For the homeless and marginalized populations, accessing healthcare is even more challenging. Barriers such as unreliable transportation, no fixed address, and missing identification can make accessing healthcare nearly impossible. This feeds into negative cycles that can keep people on the streets and out of recovery. REACH Niagara is dedicated to offering inclusive and accessible healthcare services, such as ongoing primary care, linkage to support services, counselling, distribution of harm reduction supplies, preventive care screening, and referrals. These services are delivered via mobile health clinics and programs delivered in collaboration with community partners spanning the entire region. We need to address this healthcare disparity now to ensure that everyone in our community, especially the most vulnerable, has access to essential medical services. They are located in medically underserved urban and rural communities and serve all patients regardless of their ability to pay. Health centers also played a major role in the nation’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, particularly for hard-to-reach populations. This brief analyzes the changes in health center patients, services, and financing from 2019 (pre-pandemic) through 2022, using the Uniform Data System (UDS), to which all health centers are required to report annually. #medicaid #mdrp #financial

Hospital closure is one of the biggest challenges many rural communities face, leaving residents unable to access health care. Mackinac Straits Health System (MSHS) located in Michigan’s upper peninsula struggled to remain open and had limited physician resources. Instead of closing the doors of another rural hospital, MSHS forged a strategic partnership with The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, a federally recognized American Indian Tribe with around 50,000 members. By constructing one building that would house both a new hospital and a Tribal health clinic, the two entities were able to circumvent a gap in health services by successfully turning the tide and opening a new state-of-the-art healthcare facility and Tribal health clinic. 👉 Learn more about the details of this partnership and how two partners turned a shared need for healthcare access into a successful collaboration rooted in reciprocity and trust. https://lnkd.in/gD_PjiK7 #RuralCommunities #AccessToHealthcare #TribalHealth #TrustBuilding #RuralHealth
