#UNC assistant professor Alex McAvoy was one of the first faculty members recruited at the UNC School of Data Science and Society (SDSS) in 2023. His favorite joke reflects the school’s "human-centric" approach to using data science to solve real-world problems. Learn how the school brings together faculty from humanities, social sciences and medicine to foster collaboration and help Tar Heels develop data science skills https://unc.live/3CCAnS4

Excited to be teaching the "Ideal Point Estimation, Item Response Theory, and Scaling Methods for Surveys and Behaviour" course again this summer at the Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis during Session 3 from August 5-16 (online or in-person). https://lnkd.in/eUWsab_r This two-week course covers techniques to discover, understand, and visualize latent patterns and preferences from survey data and other relational data sources including voting behavior and text. You'll learn: - Analyzing survey scales and addressing differential item functioning - Item Response Theory models for binary and ordinal response data - Bayesian approaches to scaling and IRT - Multidimensional scaling to reduce complex data to its underlying dimensions - Ideal point estimation techniques like W-NOMINATE - Applications for scaling text You'll gain experience using R to implement these methods in your own data and projects. By the end, you'll understand the theories behind the techniques and be able to derive measures of preferences such as ideology, understand latent dimensions, and visualize your data. The course will be offered in a 'hybrid' online and in-person format from August 5-16. Visit https://lnkd.in/eH_B8uMH to apply.

Empowering Future Teachers with Data Science: Data literate citizens are inevitable for a vibrant democracy. Therefore, the main focus of the DataSETUP project is to promote data science literacy in schools by enhancing the (professional) knowledge of preservice teachers in the field of data science. To achieve this objective, the project aims to draw attention towards the integration of data science into teacher education curricula at the university level from multiple disciplines.

🤔 Who are the data science experts at the Universität Mannheim, and what research projects are being conducted in this field? 📅 For over two years, we have been showcasing the (junior) researchers and their fascinating work in our monthly Data Science Insights interviews. Through this series, we’ve built a portfolio of over 30 scientists from diverse disciplines, each employing a wide range of data science methods. Together, they reflect the depth and breadth of research in this area at our university. 🌟 This month, we’re excited to feature Wladislaw Mill, Assistant Professor of Behavioral Economics. He leverages #ComputerVision to explore how war influences religiosity, using gravestone evidence from the Vietnam draft lottery as a key source of data. 🌐 You can find all expert interviews including Wladislaw's on our website: https://lnkd.in/eKBdj7SE 👉 P.S. Information about senior faculty members involved in data science can be found under the "Academic Members" section of the Mannheim Center for Data Science: https://lnkd.in/etP3_bjT
