I am delighted to share my learnings from working with London-based Beco | b corp and their wonderful sustainability manager, Toby Freeman, on their 2023 greenhouse gas measurement and SBTI-aligned reduction plans through The Change Climate Project. The process entails collecting relevant Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, engaging suppliers to adopt sustainable practices, and targeting supply chain hotspots to half emissions by 2030. Who is Beco | b corp? Founded in 2009 when George Bramble visited a Chinese chopstick factory and visualized turning excess bamboo scraps into lower carbon bowls for his black Labrador, Tarka. The company sets a high bar for sustainable pet product development - using bamboo, natural rubber, and hemp for their non-toxicity, durability, and lower land use intensity. During the pandemic when pet ownership skyrocketed, Beco | b corp launched fully compostable poop bags to divert dog waste from landfill, as well as lower carbon pet foods made from wild boar, crickets, and plants. As the company grew into their larger South London office, they procured renewable energy, installed solar panels, and became on track to Scope 2 carbon negative in the near future. We attributed Beco | b corp's great success of reducing 2023 absolute emissions by 13% (or 27% emissions reduction per product unit) while delivering double-digit growth in product unit sales to the following drivers - 🚚 Transitioning to a hybrid delivery fleet that reduced gas expenses by 40%, while shifting to physical inventory that improved emissions accuracy 🌳 Conscious trade off from synthetic to natural rubber (less energy intensive but higher shipping emissions from more weight) and gradual transition from virgin to responsibly sourced (FSC-certified) rubber 🚢 Overhauling upstream shipping with lighter airfreight packaging, transitioning to ocean freight, and prioritizing suppliers with shorter road miles, which offset downstream shipping uptake from direct-to-consumer demand 🌞 Recognizing reduction from environmental factors, such as warmer weather resulted in 20% less energy consumed Beco | b corp demonstrated that by making intentional tradeoffs and investing in lower carbon infrastructure and product innovation, a consumer product company can grow responsibly with lighter footprint on the planet. #ClimateAction #NetZero #Sustainability

Finnish coffee and food supplier Paulig, known for brands like Presidentti and Juhla Mokka, achieved a 22% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in its operations last year compared to 2018. Committed to reaching net-zero GHG emissions by 2045, Paulig aims to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 80% and scope 3 emissions by 50% by 2030. In April 2023, Paulig launched a €2.7m Climate Fund to support projects in its wheat and coffee value chains. CEO Rolf Ladau emphasized the importance of their long-term sustainability goals. Paulig also pledged to make all packaging fully recyclable by 2025, introducing recyclable vacuum coffee packaging in Finland and Estonia in May 2024. The company reported a 5.6% sales growth to €1.1bn and a 57% rise in EBIT to €90.1m in 2023. . . Join us in accelerating change! Are maggots the unsung heroes of sustainable innovation? 🐛🌿 Exciting developments are brewing at the University of Technology Sydney in partnership with GOTERRA – a trailblazer in food waste management. Goterra's innovative approach utilises black soldier fly larvae, turning them from wriggly critters into eco-warriors. These larvae munch through food waste, transforming it into valuable, eco-friendly protein and fertiliser in just 12 days. Since 2023, the UTS Integrated Product Design Research Group (IPD-R) have been working closely with Goterra to further refine this bioconversion process by developing an innovative manufacturing solution that aligns with Goterra’s circular economy objectives. This project exemplifies the rigorous research-focused approach that IPD-r adopts in its collaborations. Their aim isn’t just to create innovative products but to sculpt resilient futures that resonate with the socio-ecological fabric of our society. 🌎🌿 NOTPLA BAGS £20M TO TAKE PLASTIC-FREE SEAWEED PACKAGING TO THE U.S. Notpla, the London-based maker of sustainable packaging, has snapped up £20M (£26.8M) in a Series A extension round, doubling its initial £10M raise in 2021. The round was led by United Bankers and featured Temasek Trust’s Catalytic Capital for Climate & Health (C3H), as well as existing investors Horizons Ventures and Astanor. EIT Food’s AgriFoodInvest, The Schmidt Family Foundation, Kibo Invest, Radicle Impact Partners, and Ocean Born Foundation also participated, among others. The fresh capital will help accelerate The Earthshot Prize winner’s expansion to the US, expand its portfolio, and scale up manufacturing, with a goal of selling 100 million units of its seaweed-based packaging products in the next two years. “Our investors recognise the commercial potential of our technology and our unique solutions. This funding allows us to accelerate our growth and continue leading the market in sustainable innovation,” said Notpla co-CEO Pierre-Yves Paslier, who founded the company with fellow CEO Rodrigo García González a decade ago. Notpla’s alternatives are made by extracting natural compounds from seaweed and plants without chemical modifications, and they can be disposed of in three ways. They’re 100% recyclable, industrially compostable, as well as home-compostable, breaking down in four to six weeks. Notpla’s increasing popularity can perhaps be summed up by the fact that at the end of 2023, it had replaced 7.3 million pieces of single-use plastic in 10 countries across Europe – but it has more than doubled that to 16 million this year already.
