The reality is concerning: within the next decade, nearly 700 million people might be forced to relocate due to severe #waterscarcity (https://lnkd.in/eFravGXx). Approximately one in four children worldwide will live in regions with extremely scarce water resources by 2040, the #UN has warned. In recent years, I had the privilege to participate in the Joint FAO/WHO Expert meetings on microbiological risk assessment tasked to provide scientific advice on the safe use and reuse of water in the dairy sector and the production of fruits and vegetables. This critical work is part of ongoing efforts to conserve our water resources. While water is a major input in those industries, all industries, including the beverage sector have certain levels of water footprint. The water footprint of beverages is astonishing: According to the UN, from growing the necessary ingredients to packaging, producing one litre of soda requires 350 litres of water, and one litre of beer demands 155 litres of freshwater. Key highlights included: 💧 Increasing demand for GAC: As PFAS contamination and regulatory pressures grow, GAC has become a crucial solution for WTPs, offering effective and reliable removal. 💵 Cost-effective solutions: With the rising cost of virgin GAC, reactivating spent GAC presents a more feasible and sustainable option, ensuring continued protection of water quality while managing costs. 📊 Feasibility studies: The speakers also delved into the feasibility of establishing regional GAC reactivation facilities, offering valuable insights into the logistics, economics, and practical considerations for implementation. Addressing the PFAS Challenge in Our Drinking Water The legacy of industrialization and the use of chemicals in various applications has left an environmental footprint that can’t be ignored. From fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture to fire-fighting foams and chemical products, these substances have often found their way into our water sources, and PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) is one such pollutant. While we can’t change the past, we must face the reality and find solutions. In many areas, traces of PFAS have been detected in drinking water, but pinpointing the exact sources is often a challenge. The pressing question is: How do we tackle this issue with existing water treatment infrastructure? Many current water treatment plants aren’t equipped to remove PFAS, but it’s a problem we can’t afford to ignore. The good news is that solutions are emerging. At Global Water Technologies (GWT), our team of engineers has developed a proven approach that allows water authorities to retrofit and upgrade their existing plants with additional processes designed specifically to remove PFAS from drinking water. This means that even with legacy infrastructure, water utilities can ensure clean, safe drinking water for communities, without the need for costly, full-scale rebuilds. 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝘀 🍉Bradford Watermelons of South Carolina are not just a delicious treat—they're a lifeline. As part of the Watermelons for Water initiative in East Africa, these watermelons naturally filter contaminated water through their root systems, storing it as clean juice in the fruit. Each 40-pound watermelon holds about 4.5 gallons of bio-filtered water, offering a sustainable solution for regions with limited access to clean water. The type and level of contamination acceptable to support clean water within a watermelon was not specified. 𝗔𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝗻𝗱 🍉 In Pakistan, researchers have found another incredible use for watermelon: arsenic filtration. By using watermelon rind, which is often discarded as waste, they can remove 95% of arsenic from groundwater. This affordable and accessible filter, costing just $32 and lasting 6-8 months, is a game-changer for communities lacking expensive filtration systems.
