What is the value of a #pulmonologist / #respirologist ? I am biased but I firmly believe we offer tremendous value to patients, colleagues and the health care system. We consistently hit well above our weight in what we bring to the healthcare table. In terms of #COPD and #asthma, a recent study presented at #ATS2024 demonstrated the value of specialized pulmonary care from this recent #Canadian study. https://lnkd.in/e_fisARA The study authors found patient's suspected to have undiagnosed COPD or asthma had spirometry performed on them. Those with newly diagnosed COPD or asthma were randomized to: 💊 The intervention arm: This consisted of a pulmonologist/respirologist and an asthma–COPD educator who initiated care. OR 💊 Usual care: Care provided by their primary care practitioner. They found that those randomized to the intervention arm after one year had: ✅ Had significantly lower healthcare utilization. ✅ Had significantly greater improvements in their quality of life as measured by the SGRQ and CAT score. ✅ Had significantly greater increases in the FEV1. Keeping in mind that COPD is the #1 pathologic reason for being admitted to hospital in Canada with asthma being th fourth leading cause for patients ages of 0-17, the impact that we provide has very significant implications. Quite simply, we offer great "bang for the buck".

Sadly there are still many diseases without effective treatments. Which is why it is so important to learn about the measures we CAN take to continue to enjoy the pleasures of life.

In this observational cohort study using a large Italian administrative healthcare database including adult COPD patients (> 200.000 patients), COPD exacerbation appeared associated with a high risk of severe CV events. Interestingly, this high risk appeared sustained for up to one year compared to non-exacerbators. These findings emphasize the importance of early interventions and treatment optimization among patients with COPD to reduce cardiopulmonary risk by preventing COPD exacerbations and, in turn, non-fatal and fatal severe acute CV events. #COPD #exacerbation #cardiovascularevents #heartfailure #internalmedicine #myocardialinfarction

The HOT-HMV trial is a landmark study on the addition of non-invasive ventilation to the care of chronic hypercapnic COPD patients.
