Watching something you have worked so hard on & are wildly passionate about come to fruition is an amazing feeling. After hearing from my dear friend & former boss, Michelle Norcross, that hospitals can’t be reimbursed for services provided by Peer Recovery Coaches simply because they are employed by an entity that cannot bill for them, we got to work to figure out why that was & how we could fix it. PRCs are an essential part of the care team & support care delivery to patients with substance use disorders, connecting them to services and being a listening ear. Without them, many patients are left without a “peer” or a friend who knows how to navigate the treatment landscape & can provide a firsthand experience of accessing these services. After 18+ months of countless conversations, creating lots of new partnerships & finding out we weren’t the only ones on this crusade, we were able to successfully get $8.3M included in the FY25 budget for hospitals to reimburse for PRC services. Research. Proposals. Conversations. Partnerships. Advocacy. Outcomes. So proud to #workatMHA and be surrounded by an incredible team. Without the connection between the MHA Keystone Center’s quality improvement activities & the Policy team, this idea never would have come to fruition. And without the hard work of the Advocacy team (Elizabeth Kutter & Adam Carlson) to get this in front of the right people & ensure they understand the importance of the work, we wouldn’t have gotten this across the finish line. Here’s to continuing to improve patient outcomes by integrating #publichealth & #prevention with #healthcare.
Peer Recovery Coaches (PRCs) play a unique role in the hospital setting, combining lived experience with technical knowledge to help connect individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) to resources for treatment. With the fiscal year (FY) 2025 #StateBudget including critical funding to support the work of PRCs in Michigan hospitals, learn more about their impact from Kelsey Ostergren, MPH, CIC and Michelle Norcross (MHA Keystone Center) ➡️ https://bit.ly/4d4hJjk #PeerRecovery #PRC #SUD #MIHospitals #HospitalsHelp

yli has just endorsed SB 1319, which streamlines the process for converting unused skilled nursing facilities to behavioral health facilities, in response to the increased need for behavioral health facilities in the state. Existing law requires skilled nursing facilities that would like to provide behavioral health services to seek approvals from multiple state departments - significantly delaying the process for these critical behavioral health facilities to open and become operational. In an effort to address the fentanyl crisis, SB 1319 contributes to the Senate’s evidence-based approach to increase access to treatment facilities by creating a streamlined process to submit applications for these facilities. The integration of behavioral health into primary care settings is crucial for providing comprehensive and effective healthcare. Recognizing the interconnected nature of mental health and overall well-being, integrated behavioral health care ensures that patients receive holistic support addressing both medical and behavioral health factors. This collaborative approach involving a team of medical and behavioral health clinicians facilitates improved coordination, communication, and patient outcomes. By integrating behavioral health services into primary care, healthcare providers can better address patients' holistic health goals, leading to enhanced quality of care and improved overall well-being. In the article "Relation of Behavioral Health to Quality Healthcare Care," authors Dolores Buscemi, MD, and Susan S. Hendrick, PhD, delve into the complex relationship between behavioral health and the delivery of quality healthcare. They emphasize the far-reaching effects of behavioral health issues on healthcare quality and stress the importance of a comprehensive approach within primary care settings, highlighting the interconnected nature of mental health and overall well-being. The authors' comprehensive analysis covers a range of detailed strategies to integrate behavioral health services into primary care settings seamlessly. These strategies include integration with medical settings, primary care, the Veterans Health Administration, and departments of internal medicine, all aimed at improving patient outcomes by addressing behavioral health as integral to effective and holistic healthcare (Buscemi & Hendrick, 2018). This integration of behavioral health care recognizes the significant impact of both medical and behavioral health factors on an individual's overall well-being. This collaborative approach involves a team of medical and behavioral health clinicians working to comprehensively address a patient's concerns (The Academy, n.d.). Integrated teams deliver care in various settings, offering the advantage of improved coordination and communication to focus on the patient's overall health goals.
