HHM24 Day 10: Servicial
My grandmother woke up every day around 4am to start the big meal of the day: lunch. At sunup, she shopped at the openair markets to make the four-hour sancocho and hand grind corn for fresh breakfast arepas. This was the expectation in her generation and even for my mom and aunts, but two of her daughters (one of which was my mother) bucked the trend dangerously.
Still, that expectation to be "servicial," or to please others, to “be of service,” haunts me. It’s in the pristine cleanliness of some Latina homes, perfect home cooked meals for the family, and in home decor matching every season. Of course, I serve my family, but I am not making fresh, handground corn arepas any day for their breakfast.
In my career, I did find a way to channel being “servicial” that helped me grow. I serve my team by being empathetic, genuinely listening and incorporating feedback for a collaborative product, and identifying their strengths, even if it’s outside my team. It’s in how I provide for my clients, delivering exceptional results with my team, and even having tough conversations when schedules don’t align.
Finally, it’s how I approach the end user who uses the product or service my team delivers, keeping their use of the products and services at the forefront while delivering.
In owning being servicial, I change the framing of how I thought of it as a detrimental Latina quality, keeping women subservient, into one of strength. It’s another unique innate quality we’ve been born with and reinforced in our generations that is there to serve us in our careers.
