🤔 Did you know that environmental factors contribute to 24% of global deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization? While health is often thought of as what happens in a doctor’s office, up to 89% of it actually occurs outside clinical settings. Yet, health is frequently overlooked in urban planning decisions. The Healthy Cities Generator (HCG), newly redeveloped with EIT Urban Mobility and University of Lisbon, is changing this by helping cities design healthier, more liveable environments and quantifying the resulting cost savings 🏡 📈 From Bradford, UK, to Cascais, Portugal, HCG has demonstrated the tangible benefits of health-driven urban planning: improved life expectancy, stronger community connections, and significant economic savings. 89% of health is shaped outside the doctor’s office, in the environments where we live and move. Yet, health is often overlooked in urban planning. The Healthy Cities Generator (HCG) is changing that by integrating health and economic insights into city design. 🔬 Since 2017, the HCG has used real-world data to assess the impact of urban plans on physical, mental, and environmental health. Recently, the tool’s capabilities were expanded through a project funded by EIT Urban Mobility, enabling a better design, development, testing, and marketing of a digital tool easily accessible to cities. ↔️ In Bradford, UK, the tool found that urban greening could save €700 per person annually, with the investment paying for itself in just two years. ↔️ In Cascais, Portugal, the tool projected €400 in annual savings per resident from pedestrian-friendly spaces, achieving a return on investment in 26 months. 💬 Want to explore more innovations at the intersection of mobility, environment, and health? 🎉 Proud Moment 🎉 I’m thrilled to share the publication of my latest research article on mobility and sustainable development in metropolitan regions, with a special focus on Greater London. 🌍🚶♀️🚴♂️ A huge thank you to my advisor, Prof. Dr. Ana Cristina Fachinelli Bertolini, UCS - Universidade de Caxias do Sul, the PPGA UCS, and the incredible Citylivinglab research group. I also extend my gratitude to University of Westminster, Prof. Dr. Giulio Verdini Prof. Dr. Tony Lloyd-Jones for the opportunity and support. Now, it’s time to conclude the next one on climate change in London. 🌍🌱 Our article highlights that as the 21st century progresses, we are witnessing the rise of the “metropolitan century,” where urban populations have surpassed half of the global populace. By 2035, this trend will be even more pronounced, especially in Asia and Africa. This growing urbanization underscores the urgent need for research into mobility, demographics, and sustainable development. Our study delves into key aspects of mobility that are crucial for sustaining metropolitan regions, with an emphasis on socio-spatial equity, connectivity, and integrated governance. Aligned with global sustainability goals—such as SDG 11—we focus on decarbonization and promoting non-motorized transport. The study identifies 31 essential attributes showing how mobility drives urban sustainability and requires collaboration across different administrative levels. 🚀 Check it out and join us in tackling this exciting challenge! I am excited to know what you think about it. 👉 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dNZ3ZeKT 👈 #GreaterLondon#UrbanMobility #Sustainability#MetropolitanDevelopment #CityLivingLab #Research #SustainableCities #Decarbonization #NonMotorizedTransport NLA Transport for London Future of London Greater London Authority Laura Valdés Martina Juvara

Collective step-change for healthy, human-connected places: Towards a new urban paradigm My write-up is now available on this New London Agenda charette held by NLA, focusing on health. Following the in-depth insights gathered from the expert group, it’s really clear that a piecemeal approach won’t create the kind of fundamental and profound shifts so urgently needed and on so many fronts. The scale of the issues and diversity of potential solutions to address #urbanhealth calls for structural and systemic change. It can’t just be a friendlier-looking version of the status quo. It’s clear there needs to be a new urban paradigm. And we need new types of roadmaps and pathways to get there in a holistic and integrated way. So what could that start to look like? 1. Coherence and Consensus: Formalising a new field 2. Interconnectedness: Joining the dots at scale 3. Systemic change: Working at different levels Read here for the full write-up and potential pathways: https://lnkd.in/e2zxHR3y And today the World Health Organization launched new guidance “to inform a more strategic approach to urban health. By fostering comprehensive, forward-looking, integrated action that accounts for the complexity of urban environments and processes, we can achieve better health outcomes for urban dwellers”. (From a post by Jose Siri) By defining and formalising this area of #urbanhealth as a new field, we can enable people’s health not only to be protected, but to actively maximise the opportunities for people to flourish and thrive whilst supporting growth for cities. So do you think we need a new types of roadmaps and pathways for change that challenge the status quo? Can we move towards healthier, more human, connective, inclusive, equitable places – as the new standard for the cities of today and tomorrow? #NLAgenda #WHO #CompassionatePlaces #ConsiderateUrbanism #ConsciousDesign #CollectiveAction #Change #UrbanHealth #Innovation

Working with C40 Cities on this project was incredibly rewarding. Quantifying the health impacts of deep retrofit for different cities? for different climates? different typologies? Challenge accepted. To start with we supported C40 to develop the health benefits modules of the Multiple Benefits of Deep Retrofits Tool - it was no easy feat to figure out how to quantify health benefits on a city scale, that could use what data is available, and consider different building typologies. Making use of our extensive internal network of experts in thermal comfort, air quality, noise pollution, and daylighting design proved crucial. The tool is accessible to all and can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gfTaPUf4 Then came the fun part of engaging with the 5 cities (Washington DC, Tshwane, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and New York City); understanding their priorities, current and upcoming policies, and their data, to make the case for both sustainable and healthy cities in different climates, contexts, and policy environments. For more detail on the health outcomes for each of the cities, the full report is here: https://lnkd.in/g-qap3ja Fergus Anderson Alex Couling Anika Buchmaier Holly-Mo Vyse Ben Jones Duncan Price Lucy Rose Roberts Tristan Gerrish Buro Happold
Really pleased to be part of the C40 Cities Healthy Buildings project which has been working to support cities quantify the many benefits, in particular the health and wellbeing benefits, that come from undertaking building retrofits - highlighted in the infographic below. You can read the final report from the project, involving 5 cities here: https://lnkd.in/g-qap3ja The project has also developed two tools, available for any city to use: 🏡 Healthy & Efficient Retrofitted Buildings Tool Enables an evidence-based approach to identifying the most impactful retrofit measures for healthy, alongside wider socio-economic and environmental benefits. Find the tool here: https://lnkd.in/gfTaPUf4 📋 Urban Vulnerability Mapping Guidelines Aims to guide cities to holistically review a wide range of factors relating to buildings and the built environment to aid the prioritisation of buildings and neighbourhoods in trofit programmes to better assist vulnerable groups and reduce climate risks. Find the guidelines here: https://lnkd.in/gR2mCByT through the development of 2 tools has helped cities has helped cities helping cities quantify the many benefits, particularly health benefits, that come from retrofitting buildings - summarised below and you can read more in the final report.
