The term "lipreading" is misleading because there are several other strategies that go with lip shapes. The term "speechreading" doesn’t cover everything we do for better communication either. Thinking lipreading is only lip shapes would be like spelling every word instead of saying the word. Learning lipreading strategies is self help for hearing loss. Hearing Loss LIVE! has 2 classes available in a video format. Get all the same information from our LIVE, 6 week classes on video. Watch at your leisure, then watch again and again as needed. Join us in the fall for one of our two additional classes, LIVE and online, when we begin teaching again. -Lipreading Concepts -Lip Shapes LIVE If you think lipreading is all lip shapes, you are wrong. Lip shapes are only one of the tools. Some words look the same as other words. That's why other strategies are so necessary for successful lipreading. Learning the strategies in our Concepts class gives you new communication skills to use to aid both lipreading and your remaining hearing. https://lnkd.in/g8HaGcu3 #Lipreading #Speechreading #HearingLoss #CommunicationSkills #HearingLossLIVE

It's always a joy to teach people lipreading strategies. The first misconception I have to deal with is that it's all about the lip shapes. Knowing the lip shapes is helpful but I can prove to people with hearing loss that they already use lipreading without knowing it. I give them a specific topic like "vegetable" and then say words around the topic without using my voice. The last group of people I did that with understood most of what I said without any training on specific lip shapes. We all lipread to some degree. We just don't understand how we're doing it. The name "lipreading" is a bad name, actually. It's not accurate for everything we're doing to understand speech. The name was updated to "speechreading" but that still doesn't really cover all the strategies we use. I stick with the term lipreading because the general population does not understand the term speechreading...I get blank looks if I use it. In the image below, the bigger the pie slice, the more the strategy is used. I give private lessons, if anyone is interested. We, at Hearing Loss LIVE!, also have group rates available. Hearing people also learn how to communicate better with loved ones who have hearing loss. #Lipreading #Speechreading #OnlineClasses #HearingLossAwareness #CommunicationSkills #HearingLossLIVE

For people with hearing loss, communication is a part visual, using our remaining hearing and filling in the missing pieces with logic. This is why we sometimes answer questions off the wall... - it kind of sounded like (fill in the blank) - it sort of looked like (fill in the blank) - here's what I know with the what I heard/saw It's puzzling out words all the time. If you're not speaking clearly, or facing us when talking we have to use guesswork. Communication takes two! With 'impaired hearing', we need need you to be more mindful with communication. https://lnkd.in/eNw5Mkfq #HearingLossAwareness #Lipreading #HearingLoss #HardOfHearing #HearingLossLIVE

It's Lipreading Awareness week! It's important to understand that lipreading isn't an ability everyone with hearing loss acquires, and, even when you think you're rather good at it, certain elements can make it near impossible to decipher what’s being said. All our different accents shape how our mouths move, and so, what we're able to recognize on another speaker's lips. Our local dialects also dictate our natural word choices, our cadence, and the way we structure our sentences. This means, even if we're all speaking the same language, in lipreading terms, we're probably on very different wavelengths. Add in a bit of 'moody' lighting and speaking completely out of context, and lipreading is perfectly set up for complete and utter failure. Do you find the people you speak to most are the easiest to understand? Do you feel a little lost when trying to lipread a dialect that’s very different from your own? P.S. Thank you Living With Hearing Loss (LWHL) for inspiring this post 🩷 #Deafmetal #DeafmetalCommunity #HearingLoss #deaf #HardOfHearing #HearingAids #CochlearImplant #Lipreading #Challenge #Captions #Subtitles

Fingerspelling is quick to learn as Mickey demonstrates in the 7 minute video that goes with this blog. It’s the easiest thing you can do to improve communication with d/Deaf and hard of hearing people who know fingerspelling.
Learn how to fingerspell This month in the Sunsurfer blog https://lnkd.in/eqQpnW_k I talk about why everyone with hearing loss should learn fingerspelling. Learning along with friends and family will improve clarity and quality of communication. The seven minute video takes you through the British Sign Language (BSL) fingerspelling alphabet. As always, we welcome your feedback and thoughts, either add a comment to the blog or contact us directly.

We used this picture for last month's Hearing vs Understanding topic but this also applies to the current topic Hearing Loss LIVE! is exploring, Incidental Hearing. I don't have incidental hearing, meaning I don't pick up side conversations. With my severe hearing loss, people need to get my attention, face me and be within 6 feet for me to pick up information properly. If you say something from the side without getting my attention, there's little chance of me understanding you. I might hear your voice or it might not register at all. To make sure I get the information, make sure we are face to face. There's less repeats if you do that so less frustration all the way around. #CommunicationSkills #HearingLossAwareness #Hearing #Understanding #HearingLossLIVE

Good morning everyone! Here is your next lipreading challenge. Hints are context. Without a topic, lipreading takes more brain power. It's not impossible and this one isn't too tough. I'll post a hint later. It is a question. If you got it, give us a thumbs up or share your answer in the comments to give the other folks some context. People with hearing loss lose the conversation when topics change suddenly. A good portion of lipreading is filling in the holes with what we know of the topic. When it changes, we're still using what we know of the old topic so nothing makes sense. Slow down people. Clue us in when the topic is changed. If you are someone with hearing loss and nothing is making sense anymore, ask the person if the topic changed. Watch our strategies/concepts class to boost improve conversations when hearing loss is involved. If you are the hearing partner to a person with hearing loss, you too will learn a lot from the class. The class shares how we process information with faulty hearing. It teaches everyone how to set the stage for better conversations. We have it available on video so you can watch it at your leisure. https://lnkd.in/gN2qR76b #LipreadingChallenge #Speechreading #Lipreading #HearingLossAwareness #HearingLossLIVE
