‘Teachings come from everywhere when you open yourself to them. That’s the trick of it, really. Open yourself to everything, and everything opens itself to you.’
Richard Wagamese (Embers p.58)
As educators it’s often assumed that teaching is a one-way transmission. Adults teach; children learn.
Richard Wagamese refers to teachings as something much different than facts to memorize. The teaching he is talking about are the profound ways we can learn to grow into thoughtful, caring, and wise humans. These teachings are all around us, and at the ready for each of us if we are open to seeing and accepting them.
How would our openness to learning from and with children, one another, and the natural world change our early learning programs, children, ourselves, and the world in which we live?
Let’s begin that conversation.
