Navigating the job search can be a journey filled with twists and turns. Sometimes, even when you feel like you've given your best and aligned perfectly with a role, things don't work out as planned. It's a tough pill to swallow, but it's important to remember that every "no" leads you closer to your "yes." I recently faced a setback after three excellent rounds of interviews, only to discover the position had been reposted with a new title after zero communication from all three people I interviewed with. While it was disappointing, I'm choosing to focus on the positive aspects of the experience. The interviews were valuable opportunities to showcase my skills and receive feedback. Setbacks are a natural part of the process. They're not a reflection of your abilities, but rather a stepping stone towards something even better. Stay resilient, keep your spirits high, and continue to network and develop your skills. Here are some tips on how to move forward from a job rejection and some practices I'm currently using to stay sane: * Reflect on the Experience: Take some time to understand why you didn't get the job. Was there anything you could have done differently? What did you learn from the process? * Seek Feedback: If possible, ask for feedback from the interviewer. This can help you identify areas for improvement and strengthen your job search. * Update Your Resume and Cover Letter: Ensure your resume and cover letter are tailored to the job market and highlight your most relevant skills and experiences. * Network Actively: Build relationships with professionals in your field. Networking can lead to new opportunities and provide valuable insights. * Continue to Learn and Develop: Stay up-to-date with industry trends and invest in your professional development. * Take Care of Yourself: Rejection can be tough on your mental health. Make sure to prioritize self-care and find healthy ways to cope with stress. The right opportunity is out there, waiting for you to seize it. Trust in your journey and believe in your potential.

What I’ve Learned During My Job Search During my job search, I’ve learned a lot about myself, the process, and the professional world. The first key lesson is the importance of self-reflection. I’ve had to take a hard look at my values, career goals, and the skills I bring to the table. Understanding what I truly want from my next role—whether it’s growth opportunities, work-life balance, or company culture—has been crucial in guiding my decisions and narrowing my search. I’ve also learned that rejection is inevitable and shouldn’t be taken personally. The process can feel disheartening, but each “no” brings me closer to the right fit. I’ve realized that the right job often takes time to find, and persistence is key. Feedback, whether direct or indirect, has been an opportunity to refine my approach—whether it’s tailoring my resume, improving my interview technique, or better understanding the expectations of employers. Networking has proven to be more important than I expected. Connecting with people in my industry, attending events, or even just reaching out on LinkedIn has led to unexpected opportunities. I’ve learned that sometimes the best jobs aren’t advertised—they’re found through personal referrals. Building a personal brand online has also been crucial; an updated LinkedIn profile, a professional website, or a portfolio can make a real difference in catching the attention of recruiters. One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that job descriptions often don't tell the whole story. The reality of a role can differ from the posting, so I’ve become better at reading between the lines and asking the right questions during interviews. Company culture has become just as important as the position itself. A job with the right culture and values can make a huge difference in job satisfaction and overall well-being. I’ve also discovered that patience and persistence are essential in the process. It often takes time to hear back from employers, and following up is part of keeping momentum. Above all, the experience has taught me that the search is about more than just landing a job; it’s about finding the right fit—a place where I can thrive professionally and personally. Through it all, I’ve gained confidence in my ability to navigate the process, manage setbacks, and advocate for myself. The search is ongoing, but each step forward brings more clarity and resilience.

Should you start your job search now - or wait? If you wait too long, you might miss out. I've been going on my runs a bit earlier lately - which allows me to see the colourful transition to sunrise (like in the photo below). But if I waited even 10 minutes longer, I would have missed this beautiful show! In a job search, you don't want to miss out. So what can you gain by jumping on a job search sooner rather than later? 🌅 Opportunities - When you see a job where you meet the criteria (and it aligns with a company you want to work for), apply! You never know when the application window will abruptly close. 🌅 Networking - Building strong relationships takes time. By investing in people, you can develop meaningful connections that can advocate for you, offer advice, or provide insider knowledge about positions you are interested in. 🌅 Interview practice - Starting a job search early in the game allows you more time to prepare for possible interviews and practice telling your career stories. You could even work with a career coach (I know one!) to get feedback on your interview presence and quality of responses, which positions you well for the "real" interview. 🌅 Reflection - Even if you don't feel mentally (or physically) ready to engage in your search, there is a lot of early work that can be done to reflect on the work that gives you energy, the profile of the "right" organization for you, and even how to frame your "leave story" so you feel confident when others ask you why you are looking for opportunities. Something is always better than nothing. Start small and invest 15 minutes a day doing something supporting your job search. You will start to build momentum one day at a time. Photo credit: Me! 💗Give yourself grace and understanding! 👉Job searching is not for the faint of heart! It’s easy to feel discouraged, think that nothing is working, and tremendously important to validate yourself and your journey. 😊Recognize and be proud of yourself for the effort you are putting in, but don’t stay married to one particular method or job title. There is more than one way to get a job, more than one job board, and more than one position where you can feel appreciated, financially rewarded, and successful. 🔎Consistently analyze what is working, and what isn’t, so that you can make improvements where necessary, but don’t reinvent the wheel for the part of your process that is gaining traction. This is so important!❣️ 💬If you are getting interview after interview, but no offers, clearly you are doing a great job with your resume, but need greater interview prep. Target your efforts there. After all, when you go on an interview, they already know you can do the job, now it's a matter of connecting the dots, marketing yourself, and demonstrating that you are the best person for the position. 🤩 💗Difficult as it may be, tune out and ignore the chatter. Stay in your own lane and focus on yourself without comparing yourself to other people’s social media stories. ⭐Want some help with this? Let's chat. When it comes to landing your dream job or leveling up in your career, here’s my top advice: Visibility beats ability. It’s not enough to just be skilled—you have to make sure the right people see those skills in action. Here’s how to make it happen: ✅ Be clear on what you want: Don’t just apply to any job. Get crystal clear on the type of role that aligns with your skills, passion, and career goals. Ask yourself: What do I want to achieve, and does this opportunity bring me closer to that? The clearer your vision, the easier it is to find the right match. ✅Get in alignment: Once you know what you want, your actions and communication need to match it. Are your LinkedIn profile, resume, and conversations all reflecting your goals? Make sure you're showcasing the right skills and experience for the role you're after. Alignment is key to getting noticed by the right people. ✅Make room for the search: Clear your plate, declutter your schedule, and prioritize your job search. Treat it like a part-time job. Block time for research, networking, and interviews, and eliminate distractions that pull you away from this process. When you’re focused, you’ll attract the right opportunities faster. These three steps will get you moving in the right direction. Now go out there and take action! Found this advice helpful? Share it with your network—they might need to hear it too!
