Last week the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom made a critical announcement on how the Government will help scale up a domestic Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) market in the UK. Plans include a much-called-for UK SAF mandate, which will come into force in 2025 and will legislate for 10% SAF usage by 2030, and a consultation on options for a SAF revenue certainty mechanism. With low production volumes and the high cost of SAF as a barrier to its use and scale-up domestically, we are pleased to see measures that help produce SAF at scale in the UK. The UK SAF mandate is now in force The UK is now one of the first countries to enact the SAF mandate into law. The ambition is to supply 1.2 million tonnes of SAF to the UK airline industry annually by 2030. The new law mandates that SAF must constitute at least 2% of all jet fuel for flights departing from the UK by 2025, increasing to 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040. This mandate will send strong demand signals to energy suppliers and developers, indicating a robust market and that aviation is #openforbusiness. Consequently, this will drive demand for skilled jobs, stimulate economic growth, and support the UK's ambition to become a clean energy superpower. ✈ The CCSA welcomes the news that the UK Government has today confirmed a new target for 10% of all jet fuel to be sustainable by 2030. The new Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate would require that 10% of the fuel of all flights taking off in the UK comes from sustainable-certified sources by 2030. This mandate will come into force in January 2025, subject to parliamentary approval, and will be one of the first in the world to be put into law. SAFs are aviation fuels made from waste or organic feedstocks, and are already used by a number of airlines. Several SAF technology pathways will require CCUS, further demonstrating the need and role for developing carbon capture – it’s also therefore vital that the SAF mandate is aligned with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s work on the development and implementation of CCUS business models, to ensure that supply of SAF can match the demand stimulated by the mandate. Great news from the United Kingdom. The UK has officially mandated the use of sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF), marking a decisive step that contrasts sharply with the uncertainty seen in the US and that contrasts with efforts of European carriers like Lufthansa to lobby against SAF mandates.   Mike Kane, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Transport, put pen to paper this week following years of planning.   “Today, I officially signed the SAF mandate into law - meaning by 2040, 22% of jet fuel will come from sustainable sources. We’re serious about our commitment to the UK SAF industry and together, we’re leading the way towards greener air travel,” he said.   The legislation, which becomes effective from January 1, 2025, establishes a progressive framework that begins with a 2% SAF requirement, increasing to 10% by 2030. In fact the UK approach including a buy-out mechanism with secured high prices for #SAF will definitely be successful to kick-start a SAF industry in the UK. #Aviation is one of the fastest growing sectors, but also one that is particularly challenging to abate. Worldwide, governments are increasingly turning to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF) as the key solution to decarbonise the industry. As part of the "Future Made in Australia (FMIA)" initiative, the Australian Government has committed A$1.5 million over two years from 2024-25 to undertake a regulatory impact analysis of the costs and benefits of introducing mandates or other demand-side measures for low carbon liquid fuels. We looked into the status of SAF mandates globally, what this might mean for Australia and how we can learn from global approaches. The "Clean Skies for Tomorrow" coalition (a group of 60 companies in the aviation sector) aims for 10% SAF usage by 2030, aligning with broader efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Proposed mandates for 2030 vary from as high as 30% (in the case of Finland, Norway and Sweden), with many others in the 3-6% range. What do increasing global SAF mandates mean for Australia? ✈ In the absence of SAF mandates, Australia risks becoming a laggard in the decarbonisation of aviation. ⌛ Increasing time pressure to capture the SAF economic opportunity – without sufficient policy action and demand signals, Australia may miss out on SAF suppliers who choose to set up shop in locations of mandated demand. UK mandates 10% SAF use by 2030 To accelerate the decarbonization of its aviation sector, the UK government has unveiled a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate for the aviation industry. By 2030, airlines departing from the UK will be required to use a minimum of 10% SAF in their jet fuel, increasing to 22% by 2040. The UK’s SAF mandate, to be implemented from January 2025, will be one of the first in the world to be put into law. The nation is aiming to supply about 1.2 million tonnes of SAF to the UK airline industry each year. The SAF industry is poised to boost the economy by adding over £1.8 billion and creation of over 10,000 jobs across the country.  SAF can lower carbon emission by 70% in comparison to the traditional flights powered by fossil fuels. The govt is already supporting 13SAF projects by providing £135 million funding allocated through the Advanced Fuels Fund.
