🌎 Why does, just 9% of all plastic waste globally end up in recycling? Financially, recycling is not yet profitable. New plastics, so called virgin plastics, are way cheaper. This leads to financial difficulties & bankruptcy for recyclers. Waste consists of a complex mixture of various materials, which can be heavily contaminated. The necessary steps for collection, sorting, cleaning, and the recycling process itself lead to high costs. ♻️ Plastic isn’t the only sector where recyclers have difficulties competing against producers of new materials. Question to the market, how can we shift the way we handle our waste & precious materials? What is needed? How to make our economy more circular? —--------------------------- Plastic & plastic recycling is one of our focus sectors. Reach out to us if you want to know how sustainability can work for you 💚

this is one of the best graphics explaining the problem with plastic. the question is why? why is plastic recycling so out of step with plastic consumption and waste? part of the reason is material value - plastic degrades in the recycling process and become worthless. part of it is the back end facility capacity level. there's not enough to keep up with the run-away demand and discarding of plastic. Solution: part structural. Innovation on how we organize access to food, bev. and household goods, like cleaning materials. It can all function on the basis of refill stations. And the other part is human behavior: think before you act. Pause before you buy. Check your urge for efficiency and consuming on the go. Consume in place, in space, mindfully and in full presence of your environmental selves. #reduce #systemredesign #cleanup #refill Binit Technologies
♻️ Recycling as a tool to save our planet has been, so far, a failure The world has produced 5.8 billion tonnes of single-use plastics since plastics were invented a century ago. Recycling could have been a solution that prevents these plastics from polluting our planet. 🛑 However: 1. Only 6% of single-use plastic has been recycled, and 2. Only 15% of the recycled plastic was put back to use (rest was dumped or burned) Theoretically, and technically, recycling can work, and in some countries (e.g. Nordics) it works quite well. ❓️Which in turn begs two questions: 1. What policies can encourage, or force, 10x more recycling? 2. What policies can ensure that all recycled plastic gets put back to use? 📢Share or like if you'd like your network to see these insights. #Environment #sustainability #recycling

I recently read an insightful article in New Scientist about the transformative potential of advanced recycling technologies. Initially, I was skeptical about recycled plastics, feeling it perpetuates the existing plastic industry. However, these new methods could revolutionize plastic use by converting any type of waste plastic into new plastic repeatedly, promoting a circular economy and significantly reducing environmental impact. The article notes, “The goal is to create a circular economy for this material where there is no longer any need to make virgin plastic from crude oil.” For more details, check out the article here. https://lnkd.in/dHgbYbbr

The world has a waste problem. How can we help solve it? If it’s not recycled, plastic can be either incinerated or sent to landfill. We believe that turning waste into new resources represents a crucial step in tackling this concern. Our use of certified recycled polymers is one way we’re working to minimise our dependency on fossil-based resources, in an effort to move towards a circular economy. https://bit.ly/3XkaONJ

I agree with the observation that the “waste hierarchy” mentioned below is not necessarily sequential. Apart from that, this post effectively captures the current state of industry and sustainability.

You’ve been lied to: Recycling isn’t a sustainable solution. It’s a distraction from the real problem. Recycling is the last step in waste management. But companies jump straight to it. Why? Because it’s easier to market “green” than to change. Here’s the truth: • 91% of plastic waste has never been recycled. • Recycling consumes massive energy and resources. • Most recycled items end up downcycled or in landfills. The real impact lies in what companies skip: ↪ Avoiding waste before it happens. ↪ Reducing material use and emissions. ↪ Reusing products to maximize value. But these actions require systems, innovation, and accountability. They’re harder to measure and market. The companies leading sustainability today aren’t focused on recycling. They’re redesigning products to avoid waste entirely. They’re reducing packaging, emissions, and raw material dependency. They’re proving that sustainable practices aren’t just ethical – they’re profitable. The waste hierarchy exists for a reason: Recycling is last because it’s least effective. Real sustainability starts with Avoid and Reduce. Everything else? A shortcut. #sustainability #wastemanagement #circulareconomy #environmentalimpact

Recycling has always been marketed as the ultimate solution to waste, but Ivan Rangel's post is a wake-up call. As Ivan points out, recycling is the last step in waste management—not the first. Yet, many companies focus on it because it’s easier to promote “green” practices than to take responsibility for avoiding waste altogether. The reality is: 91% of plastic waste has never been recycled. Recycling consumes massive energy and resources. Most recycled materials end up downcycled or in landfills. Real sustainability begins with Avoiding and Reducing waste. It’s about redesigning systems, minimizing material use, and reusing products. This is a harder, less marketable path, but it’s the one we need for real change. Companies that truly lead the way are proving that sustainability isn’t just ethical—it’s profitable. Recycling has its place, but it’s time we focus on the top of the waste hierarchy: Avoid > Reduce > Reuse. Thanks, Ivan Rangel for highlighting this critical perspective.

♻️ A deep dive into plastic recycling. Globally, just 9% of all plastic waste, is recycled. Why, you wonder? Financially, recycling is not yet profitable. 🤔 Global plastic production is enormous, and so is the amount of plastic waste: each year, this amounts to 350 million tons of plastic waste worldwide. Plastic is not "one material"; there are various types. Plastics consist of polymers; long chains of the same (or very similar) molecules that form chains together. The exact appearance of these chains determines the properties of the final product and whether and how the plastic can be recycled. Read all you want to know about recycling: 💡 What happens to plastic waste? 💡 Is plastic waste really exported abroad? 💡 Why isn’t all plastic recycled? 💡 Ways to recycle:Post-industrial recycling & post-consumer recycling 💡 Methods of plastic recycling 💡 So, how to be sustainable with plastic & recycling?
