The Welsh Economy Secretary, Jeremy Miles, has officially launched Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru, a state-owned developer dedicated to accelerating renewable energy projects, especially onshore wind, across Wales. 📍 Key Highlights: Location: The Trydan Gwyrdd team will be based in Merthyr Tydfil. Collaboration: Working with Natural Resources Wales to develop wind farms on the woodland estate. Community Engagement: Early engagement with communities near initial sites. Long-term Vision: Focused on a greener, sustainable energy supply and decarbonisation. Ownership: Ensuring the people of Wales benefit from renewable energy investments. Jeremy Miles stated: "Clean energy is central to a more prosperous Wales. Owning our renewables company will allow us to develop in harmony with nature and ensure the people of Wales own the returns on this significant investment." UK Government Energy Secretary Ed Miliband added: "Wales will benefit hugely from sustainable, homegrown clean power. This step is crucial for making Britain a clean energy superpower." Last week an article by The Age drew important attention to the environmental regulations currently delaying the rollout of renewables in Australia. Despite Australia’s ambitious clean energy generation targets, investors state that it is currently taking between two and three years for renewable projects to be successfully assessed. According to Clean Energy Investor Group CEO Simon Corbell, who was quoted in the article, there are currently not enough committed projects to reach Australia’s climate commitments. “Onshore wind needs to do the heavy lifting in the national electricity market, and we need a lot more onshore wind to meet our generation capacity requirements.” If Australia is to transition to renewable energy technologies, it must have regulations in place that encourage quick construction of this infrastructure. This could mean faster green energy, fewer delays, and a boost for climate targets in Wales! 🚀💨 🏞️ What does this mean? Projects like wind farms with 10+ turbines or solar farms covering 100+ acres might soon be greenlit months faster. 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐜𝐚 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐬 announced these changes, aiming to support green jobs and ensure 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲. 🌱 These adjustments come as the sector calls for quicker approval times, but communities have raised concerns over visual impacts and the effect on rural landscapes 🌄 The government plans to address these by also tackling the shortage of skilled planners, ensuring the planning system is both efficient and community-focused. The new Labour Government’s deal with The Crown Estate to lease land on the seabed for offshore wind turbines marks a paradigm shift in the involvement of the state in generating electricity to improve UK energy security and bring down bills.   But it will be renewable energy projects on land brokered by the newly created state-owned Great British Energy that will have the greatest impact for rural estates and landowners – and are likely to create the biggest challenges.   The opportunities for landowners to benefit from a renewed focus by the Government on boosting the UK’s energy generating capacity are significant. The ending of the moratorium on onshore wind, for example, opens up the potential for new sites – or those once considered, then abandoned – to be developed by turbine operators for the benefit of both them and the landowner.   And reaching Labour’s ambitious targets to decarbonise UK electricity generation by 2030 will also require a significant growth in solar farms, again providing opportunities for farmers and landowners with appropriate sites to play their part.   But experience has already shown that estates’ hard-earned reputations and goodwill within a community can easily be lost when the reasons renewable energy infrastructure projects are needed are not clearly communicated.   Estate’s need to make it clear that these projects are helping to solve both the energy resilience crisis we face in the UK and secure the long term sustainability of the estate and the community it has supported over generations.    In a KOR blog titled ‘communicating the benefits of renewable energy’, we examine the reasons why estates and landowners – especially those with deep and long-lasting connections with the surrounding communities – need to be working with communications specialists to protect their hard-earnt reputations.
