Hi All, Hopefully this is not too controversial. This is a message primarily directed towards the General Managers, Plant managers, Converting Superintendents and Procurement Managers of the Corrugated Converting Operations that I call upon. However, this should be of some interest to many more including co-suppliers, colleagues and others. Some food for thought to try and help make for a better 2025 in our industry for all of us. Very low cost/cheaply made GCMI and other inks are indeed causing not only print issues, but in my opinion, numerous other costly operational issues. As an Example: Over 10 Years ago, we in the Flexographic Ink Industry (many ink companies) were selling “Level 1” GCMI 90 Black for around $0.60 per lb. I have met people/prospects recently that are still paying as low as $0.68 to $0.73. per lb. If you think that you are still getting the same quality for that price as the ink you were buying 10 years or more ago, you are kidding yourself. “So, what, it is still black isn’t it? Well, yes it may still be black, but it may also be prematurely plugging your anilox, damaging doctor blades and possibly even worse. Based on what I have seen, it certainly isn’t printing well. There is a lot of finger pointing when some of these issues arise. All too often, the finger gets pointed at equipment, poorly trained operators and etc. Sometimes this finger pointing is justified and sometimes it is simply a cover for some very poor-quality ink. Or at least, that is what my 20 plus in this industry years leads me to believe. Over the coming weeks, I am going to try my best and work on a sharable document that details some of the issues caused by “Cheap Ink”, along with signs of how to spot it. I will also try to include my view on how this practice started and why. I will do my best to make it an interesting read. There are many misconceptions relating to paper, print and paper packaging. 37% of European consumers believe that paper and paper packaging are bad for the environment.
