We don't have all the answers. YOU do. We're just continuing the discussion. And will never stop. Page 3 from the Society for American Archaeology's "The SAA Archaeological Record" (May 2024). Feel free to reach out to me or any of us about what you have to say and want to see happen. Also, I now have a number of opportunities (publishing and conference) for geoarchaeologists to be heard. Let me know what you want to do. Let's do this. - Heidi Chair, SAA Geoarchaeology Interest Group #yearofgeoarchaeology #erm #ermgeoarchaeology #ermculturalheritage #SAA2024 #SAA2025 #archaeologicalpowerofgeoarchaeology #culturalheritage #STP #societyforamericanarchaeology #geoarchaeology #deeptesting #ACRA #geoarchaeologist #culturalresources #SHPO #THPO #archaeology #crm #coring #geoprobe #floodplains #fluvial #alluvialterraces #paleosols #river #geomorphology #rivers #fluvialgeomorphology #stratigraphy #fluvial #colluvial #buriedAhorizons #alluvial #glacial #eolian #coastal #gsa #societyforamericanarchaeology #geomorphic #paleolandscapes #probabilitymodeling #predictivemodeling #OSL #micromorphology #radiocarbon #geoprobe #geotechnical #geotechnicalinvestigation #drilling #drillingrig

"...is investigating archaeological sites with solid geological contexts that are accurately dated. Only rigorously investigated sites using the best practices of archaeology, geoarchaeology, and geochronology will provide the primary and pivotal data to interpret the past." - Michael Waters (2019: 365) Listen to Mike. Has it? That was published 25 years ago. Geoarchaeology should be middle age by now. (the field, not the geoarchaeologists) What does middle-aged geoarchaeology look like? Are we there yet? Mainstream? Those are the first few questions I ask in my "Letter from the Chair" to the Society for American Archaeology's Geoarchaeology Interest Group this year. More to follow. By the way, the citation: Tina Niemi, “Geoarchaeology—Where Do We Go from Here?” American Journal of Archaeology 103 (1999). Yes, we've made great strides. But enough? #GIG #geoarchaeologyinterestgroup #societyforamericanarchaeology #culturalheritage #STP #geoarchaeology #deeptesting #ACRA #geoarchaeologist #culturalresources #SHPO #THPO #archaeology #crm #coring #geoprobe #floodplains #fluvial #alluvialterraces #paleosols #river #geomorphology #rivers #fluvialgeomorphology #stratigraphy #fluvial #colluvial #buriedAhorizons #alluvial #glacial #eolian #coastal #gsa #societyforamericanarchaeology #geomorphic #paleolandscapes #probabilitymodeling #predictivemodeling #OSL #micromorphology #radiocarbon #geoprobe #geotechnical #geotechnicalinvestigation #drilling #drillingrig

Never give up. That's critical. Be a warrior for archaeology. You know it's too important. That story of our human past, can be lost forever. All too easily. Forge ahead. Didn’t get your copy? Darn. I kept putting them out around the conference. They kept disappearing. Then I ran out. Who knew? Society for American Archaeology members, join SAA’s Geoarchaeology Interest Group (GIG). $3 per year. This year will be like no other. It’s the Year of Geoarchaeology. No other reason needed. You’ll get our annual newsletter, periodic emails from your current GIG Chair (me), and invites to our monthly online meetings- to talk shop, how to advance geoarchaeology to full integration at every phase of every archaeological project, training, just about everything. And we got goals. Big ones. You don’t have to be a geoarchaeologist to join, just “geoarchaeology interested” works just fine. Join us! #SAA2024 #yearofgeoarchaeology #geoarchaeologyinterestgroup #archaeologicalpowerofgeoarchaeology #culturalheritage #STP #societyforamericanarchaeology #geoarchaeology #deeptesting #ACRA #geoarchaeologist #culturalresources #SHPO #THPO #archaeology #crm #coring #geoprobe #floodplains #fluvial #alluvialterraces #paleosols #river #geomorphology #rivers #fluvialgeomorphology #stratigraphy #fluvial #colluvial #buriedAhorizons #alluvial #glacial #eolian #coastal #gsa #societyforamericanarchaeology #geomorphic #paleolandscapes #probabilitymodeling #predictivemodeling #OSL #micromorphology #radiocarbon #geoprobe #geotechnical #geotechnicalinvestigation #drilling #drillingrig

So happy to be published in the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology this week 🙌 “Marra Families were involved in the anthracological study from the excavation and question design, reference collection and ethnobotanical record making, to the interpretation stage of the data. What emerges is the possibility for anthracology and archaeobotany more generally to move beyond orthodox schemes of interpretations. More specifically, there is a trend in (environmental) archaeology to consider the complex entanglement between people and their ecosystems through the application of supposedly universalist (but fundamentally structured in modern western scientific terms) theoretical models. The integration of Marra perspectives and stories about Country and wood, especially the over-represented wakuwaku/marnunggurrun at Walanjiwurru 1 has allowed us to use the information held in the wood charcoal record to consider how the Old People travelled through Country and cared for it, how past relations with Country and specific plant kin could still be read in the archaeobotanical remains, and how these shed light on the activities conducted on the site that left traces as archaeological features. We hope this exploration can be expanded on and improved with other works and that collaborative anthracology can help trace a new trajectory for the discipline’s future.“ https://lnkd.in/gR4CF438

Micro-Climate Blog #18! which shares the power of community archaeology to link past and present, people living now with the land around them and all who have come before. As we take in the results of the US election and what it will mean for action on climate, raising up those who are strengthening connections between communities and their local environments feels like one of the most important things I - and we - can do.
New in our Micro-Climate Blog Series from Marcy Rockman! Community archaeology is more than just digging up the past. It's about connecting with the land and the people who have lived there. The Xwe’etay/Lasqueti Archaeology Project in British Columbia is a great example of how this practice brings communities together. 🔍 There's more to be learnt about ancient human life in the Namib Sand Sea on the west coast of Namibia. 🌍 Abi Stone, Reader in Physical Geography, The University of Manchester and Dominic Stratford, Professor of Archaeology, University of the Witwatersrand are part of an interdisciplinary research team of physical geographers, archaeologists and geospatial scientists, interested in the long-term history of deserts and human-environmental interactions. Their research provides a timeframe for the presence of a small freshwater lake that once existed in the Namib Sand Sea, and draws attention to the Namib Sand Sea as a place archaeologists should study to learn more about far-reaching and deep human connections across southern Africa. #NamibSandSea #PhysicalGeography #Archaeology #Geospatial

The second Blackfoot Archaeology Conference, called Ksaahkommitapii, (spirit of the ground) in the Blackfoot language, concluded on Saturday. The conference provided an opportunity for collaboration between attendees and member tribes of the Blackfoot Confederacy focused on the blending of Blackfoot philosophical principles and archaeological analysis. As stated by Piikani Nation member and chair of the Iron Shirt Culture and Heritage Society Jerry Potts: "Archaeology can look at a rock and date it, but why it's there and what it means … we're the only ones that can interpret that." https://lnkd.in/egBKCddW #jha #historicalresearch #history #canadianhistory #historyincanada #landclaims #litigation #knowledgeseeker #historynerds #researchandanalysis #researchconsultants #indigenousrights #qualityresearch #analysis #historical #firstnations

6moGood job, Heidi. Besides hand augering, which is physically demanding, do you know a better way to obtain core samples to a depth of approximately 1 m? There may be electrical cores to get the job done easier.
