Scientific articles have evolved to include new types of content, moving beyond the traditional format of introduction, methods section, results, and discussion. In today’s post from ORIGINal Thoughts, author Kharissia Pettus discusses how journal articles have evolved over the years and how new content, article types, and even journals are better serving the research community. https://lnkd.in/entbd2h3

ORIGINal Thoughts is Origin Editorial’s series of blog posts that aim to summarize complex ideas, emerging changes or new initiatives/policies that are shaping scholarly publishing. Additionally, the articles frequently provide guidance on next steps or implementation strategies. They might inspire you to explore an idea at your own journal. In this post Kharissia Pettus does a wonderful job explaining how traditional notions of what an article looks like are being up-ended. I must confess, the concept of a data article, even a data journal, is a new one for me. This is why I subscribe to the blog!

The exponential increase in the number of scientific publications has put pressure on researchers to produce, which sometimes risks compromising quality and scientific transparency. Initiatives like the #EQUATORNetwork help promote a range of scientific protocols that provide standards for study design, writing, dissemination, and scientific interpretation. In the field of medical research, would adopting such protocols be beneficial? This is the question my colleagues Erik Montagna e Gabriel Laporta, PhD, MPH and I address in our editorial. The editorial is Open Access, so happy reading! Every researcher needs to know this..
I help you publish your paper in top-tier journals; even those 𝑛-time rejected ones | Research Professor & Director @ TEC | Co-founder & CEO @ Horizone
Do you know why journals reject so many papers? The higher the rejection rate, the more prestigious a journal. The same applies to conferences. As chair of publication for multiple international conferences, I’ve made a commitment to the publisher to accept ONLY 30% of the submissions or LESS! This means we reject 70% of the submissions and select the very best from the entire pool. → How do you ensure your work is among the top 30%, 20%, or even 10%? By demonstrating that your article directly contributes to the journal's business model. → What does that mean (to the journals)? Your article should bring plenty of citations for the journal. → Why is this important (to the journals)? The impact factor and quartile of a journal are calculated based on these matrices. It's a vicious cycle that may seem unfair. It might be! But we can make a smart choice of journal. If you have a massive readership, ⤴ you’re almost welcome everywhere. If you present a huge breakthrough, ⤴ journals will fight to get your paper. But if your work has a narrow scope, ⤴ go for super-specialized journals. And if your work offers a tiny novelty, ⤴ be okay with lower-impact journals. Not every single paper must be huge! But every piece of finding is worth sharing! ____________________ 🔔 This is Dr. Samira Hosseini. Over the past 8 years, I have trained thousands of scholars to publish their articles in top-tier journals and supported nearly 2,000 articles published in prestigious international journals. I'm here to support you, too. As a researcher, selecting the right journal for publication is a daunting task as one has to consider several factors such as the scope, quality, reputation, impact factor, and publication fees of the journal. With the number of publications in various fields and disciplines increasing steadily over the years, one has to be careful in making the right choice. According to Scopus, there were over 3.6 million articles published in 2019, compared to 1.6 million in 2009, indicating a growth rate of about 62% in a decade. #research #publication #journalselection https://lnkd.in/dPuZRiXC

Here's a good practice I'd love to encourage in scientific publishing: I became aware of this recently, and it's cool, especially if you're just starting out in research. Nature Portfolio publishes a full peer review file. The complete back-and-forth between authors and reviewers of the paper. Very often you can get much more insight about the context of the paper from this file, and much of your own confusion can be explained in it. "Why did they do this experiment instead of that other one?" "How come they use this technique, which isn't very reliable?" Many such questions are asked by the reviewers and answered/argued for by the authors. And sometimes it leads to honest interesting discussions and speculations, like the one in the picture below. ♻️Repost so more people see this. P.S. do any other journals do this, or something similar? Please let me know.
