💡 Will Europe seize its €8 trillion #DeepTech opportunity?  💡 How can we bridge the commercialization gap and transform research into impact?  💡 What bold steps do we need to lead the way? I had the pleasure of discussing these important topics with Rafael Laguna de la Vera from SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen at the #FallingWalls Science Summit. Drawing from our latest BCG report ‘From Lab to Leader,’ Rafael and I explored the challenges and significant opportunities for Europe’s deep tech economy. Despite Europe’s strong position in research—with seven of the top 10 spots in the Global Innovation Index—it secures only €58 billion in deep tech funding compared to the U.S.’s €215 billion. Reflecting on the 2-day IMD Alumni Symposium on #AI, it’s clear that we are on the verge of a transformative moment in technology - what was referred to as the “Zero Moment.” We explored the pivotal role AI will play across sectors, from education to energy, and the pressing need to foster innovation while ensuring ethical and responsible development. A key takeaway was the alignment needed among global stakeholders. Whether through the EU AI Act or initiatives in the Middle East, there is a shared responsibility to define our vision, mobilize communities, and claim ownership of what we do well. AI is the new operating system for education and work, democratizing access while evoking both excitement and concern about the future. From Microsoft’s emphasis on trust and security in AI to the role of regulation, it’s clear that balancing innovation with governance is crucial. AI’s potential to increase productivity is immense, but it requires human input and collaboration. The symposium also addressed the global implications of AI, particularly in sustainability, where countries like Finland and Sweden are leading the way with data centers powered by renewable energy. We also touched on the emerging concept of data as labor, where personal data is viewed as a valuable asset, much like human labor. Data has become a key factor of production, especially in an AI-driven world. Some are beginning to argue that individuals should be compensated for their personal data, recognizing its use in AI models and the digital economy. Data unions and cooperatives are ideas being explored to give people more control and ownership over their data. This concept raises critical questions about the future of work: Could data eventually be a form of labor, and if so, how will this reshape the labor market and our understanding of value creation in the digital age? The future of AI is undeniably bright, but it’s also complex. By engaging in thoughtful, collective action, we can ensure AI serves society in meaningful ways. Finally, my gratitude to the IMD President David Bach for supporting this symposium, Öykü Işık and Michael Yaziji for their insights on AI’s future, and José Parra Moyano for his inspiring session on AI adoption. A final thought for discussion: each interaction with AI, like generating a request in #ChatGPT, comes at a cost - equivalent to fresh water, energy, and other resources. So, how do we decide, on personal, company, country, and global levels, when AI should be used and when it shouldn’t? And with data becoming a form of labor, should we be compensating individuals for the data they provide, much like we do for their physical and intellectual labor? #IMD #IMDAlumni
