Bhagawan lovingly reminds us today and inspires us to introspect. “Udaseenah'' means indifference towards sorrow and joy, loss or gain, honour or dishonour. You must be concerned only to see whether your actions are pure and selfless according to your conscience. Nothing else matters, neither praise nor blame of other people. When your conscience tells you what you are doing is good, you may go ahead regardless of the opinion of others, whether they are your kinsmen, friends or others. This is the true meaning of Udaseenah (indifference). You should not be swayed by fears or threats. In this context, it is advisable for sevaks to keep away from politics. Sometimes, out of a desire for recognition or publicity, one may be tempted to cultivate relationships with men in power. This temptation corrupts your mind. By developing the Udaseenata (spirit of indifference) in its true sense, you must seek to serve all with a feeling of love. Indifference should not assume the form of arrogance or ostentatious condescension. Adhere to what is right and turn away from what is bad. The Third Main (Cardinal) Virtue is Moderation (Temperance). Moderation is having self-control so a person rightly fulfills their passions and appetites. We live with many passions and appetites - from hunger and thirst, to friendship and romance/sexuality, to money and material possessions, etc. In our present day, in most ways, people are encouraged to actively pursue the gratification of their passions and appetites, especially those related to romance and sexuality. However, when we consider that we are designed for a purpose (both in whole and in part), then we begin to see the connection between virtue and moderation/rightful fulfilment of our desires. And, by implication, it begins to become clear how it is the Seven Deadly Sins are the wrongful fulfillment of our desires (greed, gluttony, lust, etc). Let us seek to be virtuous to know how to rightly fulfill our desires and to have the self-control (for the Christian, by depending upon the Holy Spirit) to act accordingly.
