The CMO Accelerator Program is Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity's premier learning initiative for senior marketing leaders, and I've had the privilege of leading it since 2013. This week, 30+ marketing leaders who have been through the program reconvened for a live session with The Coca-Cola Company' Islam ElDessouky, Global VP of Creative Strategy & Content. We discussed Coca-Cola's triumph at Cannes Lions 2024, where they won 17 Lions and were named Creative Brand of the Year, and we talked about: 1. Leadership isn't a gift; it’s built! Powerful insights from Carlos Brito on high-performance culture and meritocracy. I saw a fantastic ted talk of him at stanford graduate school and I admire the practical human side he has from his leadership angle. According to Brito, real leaders are not born — they get there by practicing every day (and failing some days in the process) being humble and delivering results. He also emphasizes the necessity to create a meritocratic culture when it comes down on building high-performance teams. A couple of takeaways I found interesting from it was: - True meritocracy: Growth based on talent and results, not tenure. - Humility as a strength: There will always be someone better at something – the goal is to learn and close those gaps. - Culture is everything: In mergers, the right culture is more important than spreadsheets. - Results over effort: Impact matters – effort alone doesn’t guarantee success. One phrase that really stuck with me was: “A leader is anyone with a goal who needs a team to achieve it.” If you’re also interested in leadership and company culture, it’s definitely worth a watch! Today Albert Heijn became a B Corp. Congratulations!! After Marcello Palazzi and I co-founded B Lab Europe 11 years ago this is a big step for the B Corp community. It is also a very big step for Albert Heijn. Thousands of smaller B Corps all over the world have made the B Corp brand valuable and made it clear to consumers that becoming sustainable is a journey, a never ending road forward. With Leaders who dare to take that path forward. Courageous Leaders, because it is not easy at all for large companies to convince their stakeholders that this is the way forward. But we need companies of all sizes to step on that journey towards sustainability. Some companies are very sustainable and some are just starting. All are learning from each other and helping each other to make the right moves. Because if the sustainability movement only stays a small company activity, we will never make it. Stepping out of the sustainability-bubble is our biggest challenge, involving all the people on this planet. As Marit van Egmond, CEO of Albert Heijn says; it is about making a small step forward every day, towards building a sustainable company. Earlier this month, at the Tetra Pak Senior Leadership Meeting in Sweden, I had the privilege of collaborating with Francesco Faella and Vincenzo Benevento to lead a session on creating value for our customers.   Our focus? Shifting from a product-led mindset to an outside-in, customer-led approach. By framing our discussion around food categories, just as our customers do, we uncovered new ways to connect our products and solutions to real-world consumer needs. Our sessions on planning, debating, and rehearsing led to more than just a great presentation. It sparked a realization: Marketing is about uncovering opportunities, driving growth and ensuring our customers truly perceive the value we deliver.   This is at the core of our role as Marketers. Collaborating with our customers to solve problems, seize opportunities, and grow sustainably. It’s about leading with purpose to create value that resonates far beyond the transaction.   Oh, and as for Francesco and Vincenzo? Let’s just say they’ve become honorary marketing advocates—though I think I’ll leave product and solution lifecycle management to them!

We can talk forever about the rationale for our PepsiCo SPARK cultural change program and how it is a natural evolution of the improvement journey we have been on for a number of years. Ultimately in a competitive business environment however, it is the translation of words into action and the safety, quality, cost and delivery results it delivers that will determine SPARK's legacy. A number of years ago, a former football manager of Everton FC’s cross-city neighbour was cautioned not to blame the press per se as the reason his tenure at the club was deemed unsuccessful. It was pointed out to him that all the press did was report the results of his team ☺. Results in the immediate term for SPARK means the voice of the front-line…… it is very inspiring to receive feedback like the ones below from PepsiCo Veurne in Belgium. With any large scale cultural change program, everything starts and ends with leadership. More specifically, servant leadership. It is a key differentiating factor between the many cases of absence of belief in a new program and its eventual abandonment versus much rarer examples of widespread adoption and long term success. And back to results...... we are already starting to see the translation of growing front-line engagement and ownership into business benefits. Last month (May 2024) was a record volume output for the focus line of the PepsiCo Veurne Run-to-Target.
