This third 'reflections on 2024' post focuses on the #ZeroSuicideSociety Humber-to-Mersey #JoinTheDotsTour, 11-23 June, which was co-ordinated via Towards Zero Suicide CIC and was one of the biggest Tours dedicated to #SuicidePrevention the UK has ever seen. Crucially, we kept it focused on suicide prevention without drifting into being 'a #MentalHealth campaign', as so often happens. This superb short film made by Garry Lynch of Bear Media brilliantly captured the essence of the Tour, and key highlights: https://lnkd.in/eh9YfNGt We started planning this Tour in Oct 2023. From Jan-June 2024, I was flat out on this pioneering initiative, which comprised 19 major events in 15 towns & cities across the M62 Corridor in 2 weeks, designed to arrive in Liverpool for the 5th Global #ZeroSuicide Summit - being held in the UK for the first time - which I attended on 24/25 June. It was a long stressful rollercoaster ride in the planning, organisation & delivery, with some of the biggest highs in my life & career, and some of the biggest lows too. I experienced the suicide prevention field at its collaborative best, but a lot of negative energy to contend with as well. I'm proud of what we achieved together, and proud of my own contribution and resilience in adversity. There were several key partnerships, inc: > North Lincolnshire #PublicHealth to deliver the Launch Conference; > the #AthleticMindsFoundation to put on a brilliant Fathers' Day programme, which was covered on ITV Calendar News; > #TheBigFandango in Bury, and its many local partners, where I returned for #WorldSuicidePreventionDay 2024; > EPiC HOPE CIC in Wigan, who I joined again just before #WSPD 2024 for the #WalkOfHope; > the Warrington Wolves Community Foundation & Rugby League Cares, who helped us with programmes at the Stadium; > Samaritans who supported us with volunteers in every location. We had 40+ public education talks & short courses in conference centres, community centres, wellbeing cafes, cinemas, theatres, sports stadiums, bars & shopping centres. It wasn't just superficial 'awareness-raising' as we know this has little or no impact in reducing the suicide numbers. We tried to focus on deeper education and prompting action, inc: 1) prompting immediate action, via always pointing people to the Zero Suicide Alliance online training; 2) capacity-building for those working in suicide prevention, and a post-Tour report addressing their key support needs; 3) developing and strengthening relationships across the North of England; following up & following through after the JoinTheDots Tour; and revisiting many of our Tour locations & Tour partners later in the year. The work continues with talks & workshops being rolled out in 2025 - in Tour locations and other areas - focusing on systems change and transformational change at all levels to get the suicide numbers on a downward trend - #TowardsZeroSuicide...not just one-off profile-raising!

"We don't have the time; we don't have the money to put into this because there are there are things which governing bodies think are probably more of a priority." An interesting article and great to see industry intent to develop benefits to those in need. Some interesting parallels with the Veterans Agenda - especially in view of the recent launch of Operation Prosper. The Office of Veterans Affairs will hopefully endure if there is a change in Government - if not, then where does the momentum come from to tackle inequalities for those who resettle from the Armed Forces?

From the "Home of Innovation" Zone 33 #ICA Companion Clubs like IMPACT and others not only help Rotary clubs grow but they also serve a great purpose in allowing people who would normally leave your club a chance to continue their Rotary journey. Remember retention starts with choices. Every year members leave Rotary because life was getting in the way of them attending your Rotary meetings. A new job, changing schedules, or other commitments shouldn’t mean the end of their Rotary membership. With Companion Clubs, your members can stay connected to service on THEIR terms.
