Super new paper co-authored by members of the BirdLife International team! Bycatch of #seabirds in #fisheries is a global issue and a top threat to #European seabirds. About 195,000 seabirds are killed as #bycatch in European waters EVERY YEAR. Common Guillemots are most affected, with over 31,000 birds killed annually. Gillnet fisheries cause the highest bycatch levels, followed by longline fisheries. These numbers are likely underestimated as good data on bycatch isn't always collected. Good monitoring, reliable data collection and increased #transparency in fisheries activity is required to improve our understanding of the impacts of this #industry on seabirds and the wider #ocean #ecosystem. https://lnkd.in/eEnm2Ju4 Photo by James Grecian

Bycatch poses a significant threat to seabirds both Globally and in the UK. With a decline across 62% of seabird species in the UK tackling bycatch should be a top priority to reduce unnecessary deaths. Studies such as this by BirdLife International highlight the scale of the challenge. The great news is bycatch is solvable. The TransparentSeas report produced by RSPB WWF-UK and Marine Conservation Society details how mandatory Remote Electronic Monitoring is needed to reduce bycatch for species such as seabirds and cetaceans. https://lnkd.in/ejyb53uu.

🐟 ISA’s latest fact-check focuses on the status of fishing activities in the Area, providing credible information on the work carried out so far to understand the potential overlap between fisheries activities in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) and future deep-sea mineral resource exploitation in the Area. ISA collaborates with international organizations, including FAO, and it is also developing binding environmental thresholds for pressures that might affect deep-sea fisheries. Check out this insightful update on a recent Sea Pact funded project! 🦀
This is a great example of seafood companies, through the precompetitive collaboration Sea Pact, investing to improve management and conservation of fisheries. Crustacean fisheries are the last hold-out - still using size to approximate age. The Sea Pact-funded study was part of an ongoing effort by Otoliths-Lada Canada CEO and Chief Scientist Raouf Kilada to find a more accurate method to age crustaceans... https://lnkd.in/exN3TUGN

What's the hidden cost of global fisheries in high seas? The approach will be divided into two parts. So we begin to explore, in a quick knowbite, the concept of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs), the challenges of regulating the high seas, and the major players driving the global fisheries industry. Let's gain some insight into what's happening beyond our view! 😉

6moThanks for sharing this. It's not just in Europe sadly.. I remember being in New Zealand in 2020 on an albatross birdwatching tour and learning about these majestic creatures being caught and dragged along by fishing vessels... there was a project, which sadly got scrapped, to provide bird-safe fishing equipment ... a hook protected by a device which would only open and release the hook when it was in waters deeper than the fishing / diving range of albatrosses .... something for the new Commission?
