Glad to announce that I have successfully passed the ABRSM Grade 5 Jazz Trumpet Exam with merit! Was quite a challenge to prepare for an exam of this level without a music teacher, however here are a few of my learning outcomes from the exam, 1. Tunes: The repertoire covered a wide range of styles - from New Orleans and swing through to modal, jazz-rock and Latin jazz that helped me explore subgenres and their variations across the geographical expanse of Jazz music. 2. Scales: Scales progressively helped develop technical control, flexibility and knowledge of the instrument needed for improvisation. They also familiarised me with common patterns, roots and key centers found in jazz. Utilizing patterns like pentatonic and blues scales and various modes built up a variety of these patterns on common roots essentially strengthening my jazz vocabulary. 3. Aural Test: In solo work, jazz musicians hear and understand the rhythmic and harmonic context in which they are working since jazz ensemble musicians must make choices about their role within the overall texture and the notes or rhythms that are most appropriate to play in a particular style of music. The aural tests helped me listen to music this way to foster working by ear. 4. Quick Studies: Jazz is an aural tradition, and the ability to learn new material quickly and recreate it by ear as well as from notation is vital. The quick studies helped develop these skills by tasking me to recreate short phrases and improvising an 'answer' to them. Thanks to ABRSM for their commitment to nurture a love for, and achievement in music. And most importantly, to believe that everyone regardless of background or circumstance, should be supported to realize their full musical potential. Thanks to Penelope Braganza for coordinating and easing the exam booking process. Anyone from my network who would want to pursue ABRSM Jazz music exams, feel free to reach out to me for any assistance for this exam. Request you to share this if you find it useful, you never know how it might help someone Good day! #ABRSM #jazz #jazzmusic #improvisation #musicexam #jazzeducation #musiceducation #education #music #trumpet #abrsmexam #jazztrumpet
