The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, launched during the United Nations Biodiversity UN Biodiversity Conference in 2022, encourages governments, companies & investors to publish data on their nature-related risks, dependencies and impacts. These disclosures are intended to drive businesses to recognise, manage and mitigate their reliance on ecosystem goods and services. However, there is a ‘biodiversity blind spot’ that is evident for most organisations and business schools. Business education rarely addresses the root causes of biodiversity loss, such as the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources. As the dominant positioning of Education for Sustainable Development Goals (ESDG) presents biodiversity in anthropocentric instrumental terms inadequate for addressing ecosystem decline, we posit that a more progressive and transformative #ecocentric #education through #ecopedagogy and #ecoliteracy is needed. Both approaches include the development of critical thinking about degrowth, the circular economy and conventional stakeholder theory to include non-human stakeholders. Using comparative case studies from Northumbria University, the University of Hong Kong and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, we Dr Simon Smith Engelbert Fellinger Les Tickner and others illustrate how business education can be transformed to address #biodiversity loss, providing theoretical guidance and practical recommendations to academic practitioners and future business leaders. Meanwhile I'd say I'm an expert in supporting colleagues to successfully run synthesis/collaborative team science workshops. But co-running (with the great Beatrice Crona) a workshop on a relatively new topic for me is a totally different story :) 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 "𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 & 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬". The purpose of this meeting is therefore to ▶️ bring together a group of respected biodiversity scholars to evaluate the core logic of these standards (indicators and metrics to measure effects of coporate activities on biodiversity) ▶️ facilitate a discussion of what the consequences of these may be for our ability to monitor and assess corporate contribution to biodiversity status and change over time. ▶️ We hope meeting participants will be able to coalesce around some core statements as to the strengths and pitfalls of these standards from a sustainability and biodiversity science point of view. Its a quite new field for me, but as professional synthesizer & biodiversity researcher, with a wish, that our science has an impact on decisions towards a sustainable living, I see a strong need to facilitate discussions & reviews of those metrics and indicators. I see a strong need for more rigorous inclusion of biodiversity researchers & for a genuine exchange & discussion of researchers & initiatives (such as EFRAG, Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) etc).

Internationa Day of Biological Diversity - Get in the plan The Caribbean is slated to be an ecosystem marker for impacts due to climate change. I recall being given the challenge of developing the curriculum for the Environmental Science major in the Department of Natural Sciences at the Barbados Community College and feeling accomplished by including contemporary teaching objectives, and then having the opportunity to interact with our first cohort. Many of these students, also being inspired by the guidance of main Lecturer Mr. Leroi Coppin, chose to pursue advanced degrees in the field and are playing active roles in environmental management on island and in the Caribbean. We never anticipated that in two decades we would be experiencing the climate change impacts that were considered mainly theoretical at the time. Higher than average temperatures, periods of drought, more severe weather systems, coral bleaching, biodiversity loss, reduced agricultural production and the need to shift to sustainable methods, were all stressed in the learning objectives. Education is key for survival and the continuum, and it was important that the Associate Degree Programme prepared the young scientists for future study. So, we were in the plan then, but how do we respond to the challenges in the immediate? Biodiversity loss is of great significance, but it seems that it is not as concerning a topic, being undersubscribed in regional conversations. Diversity in plant resources is essential for rebounding from impacts on the resource, for food security and health, where traditional healing methods are still practiced. The Caribbean has a high level of endemism within the plant species in the hotspot with Cuba registering around 50% relative to the Caribbean estimated 72%. How many of us know these species? How much research is being conducted on these species which are unique to the region and offer opportunities for the discovery of new foods and health products? Are we getting into the plan? How many of these species do you know? There are 11,000 plant species identified in the Caribbean with just over 7000 being endemic/unique to the region. Where are the new fruits, new spices, new supplements, new soups, new cereals........Let's Get In The PLAN for conservation and sustainable utilization of this resource! The image is Solanum torvum or Turkey berry, related to potatoes and tomatoes in the Solonaceae family. It has medicinal value, and the fruits can be used to prepare tasty side dishes. Knowing the biocultural tradition is however important before use.

🎉 Thrilled to announce the publication of my first single-author paper, a significant milestone in my academic journey! What makes this moment even more special is achieving it two months before completing my second year as a PhD candidate. In this paper, I tackle the ethical challenges of biodiversity offsetting, a widely debated conservation tool. Using a compensatory theory framework, I argue that biodiversity offsetting overlooks the irreplaceable personal, emotional, cultural, and religious attachment people have to specific places – an aspect that cannot be fully compensated. As such, I contend that biodiversity offsetting results in under-compensation, with significant ethical and policy implications. A huge thank you to my supervisor and mentor, Peter Seele, for his invaluable support and friendly review throughout this process and whose guidance has been instrumental in shaping this work! You can read the full article in open access here: https://lnkd.in/e53NCtJJ Excited for what’s ahead as I continue developing my research! #phdjourney #research #publication #biodiversity #academicmilestone #ethics #environmentalethics

Where can our our year-long research project on biodiversity credits with PJ Stephenson add most value? We want to help businesses engage meaningfully with voluntary biodiversity credits that make a positive, material difference for #biodiversity. The space is already crowded: - The Biodiversity Credit Alliance is working hard on many aspects, and is funded by UN Environment Programme, UNDP and Sida; - The International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits is a powerful mechanism to gain political traction; - The World Economic Forum has a biodiversity credit initiative which is producing solid research and even has an auction planned for businesses Nature Finance is producing lots of helpful research - WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development is a powerful convenor of businesses… … the list continues We hope to help businesses navigate this space most efficiently for the greatest possible impact. We are motivated to do the most good possible. 👉 Where do you see the biggest gap or blind spot in this landscape? Where can University of Lausanne - UNIL and IMD add the most value? We’re up for input! As we actively outreach to many people these days, I thought I’d ask the wider crowd on LInkedIn as well! 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱! 🤩 Our alumnus, Farhan Aulia Rahman, a graduate of the Master’s program in Sustainable Finance and Investments, has been awarded the Best Master Thesis Award at the 19th edition of the FIR-PRI Awards for “Finance & Sustainability”. 🌳 Farhan’s thesis, titled “Financing Biodiversity Conservation: Scale-up of Green Bond Market” was supervised by Cătălina Papari and Prof Kees Koedijk. His research analyzed the use of corporate green bonds in financing biodiversity conservation and restoration efforts. The study examined the characteristics of projects funded by green bonds, their impact on biodiversity, and the transparency of bonds focused on biodiversity goals. The findings revealed that the performance of green bonds is largely influenced by the nature of the projects they finance, with higher co-benefits and impact levels leading to better performance. Additionally, the study found that investors perceive pre-issuance reviews differently, offering important insights for issuers, policymakers, and investors. 😊 Farhan, currently an Investment Associate in Forestry at FMO – Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank, shared: “Receiving the FIR-PRI Award is an immense honor. My research aims to bridge the biodiversity funding gap through innovative financial solutions like green bonds, highlighting their potential in mobilizing private capital for biodiversity conservation. This award underscores the importance of scaling up financing solutions to effectively support biodiversity conservation efforts.” 👏 We congratulate Farhan and his supervisors on this outstanding achievement! Really enjoying being part of this exciting project. A great opportunity to move forward through better understanding the connectivity within our landscape, both in a biophysical and socio-economic sense, and to learn to make critical decisions on #naturebasedsolutions for a better future on the back of that understanding. #climateadaptation, #SDGs, #climatemitigation
We will work with NATURESCAPES in diverse social, cultural, economic and geographical settings across 30 functional urban areas (FUAs) with a specific focus on 12 case studies in the European Union, Latin America and the United States of America. Using the FUAs concept, which includes urban areas as well as surrounding rural and coastal areas, we will explore and analyse the interaction between natural assets and nature-based solutions within and between diverse rural, coastal, and urban landscapes. For the 30 FUAs we will investigate the contribution that natural assets and nature-based solutions make to climate, biodiversity and communities, how these benefits are distributed socially and spatially, and the governance conditions associated with different impacts.
