The Future Flight Challenge has released this powerful resource outlining the key use cases for future flight technologies – from transporting goods and people to inspecting our critical national infrastructure. The difference drone inspection can make for our critical national infrastructure is clear; making our infrastructure more sustainable, secure, safe and effective by transforming data capture. As the report states: “Better data, captured more efficiently, with no potential risk to individuals and using green technology will transform aerial inspection, monitoring and survey.” UK Research and Innovation’s Future Flight Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK and ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, is helping Britain build the ecosystem needed to accelerate the introduction of advanced air mobility, drones, and zero-emission regional aircraft in the UK. What’s UpNext? Another pioneering research project in the history of modern aviation is in full swing - and Volz Servos is once again in the thick of it! For their eXtra Performance Wing project, we are equipping Airbus UpNext with customized actuators 🥳 „[Their] eXtra Performance Wing project aims to improve flight performance and respond to environmental concerns by completely rethinking aircraft wings as we know them today“, as Airbus informs on its website. The wing design is currently being adapted to a Cessna Citation VII business jet platform, which is a model of a commercial single-aisle aircraft at about one-third scale. The demonstrator aims at reducing aerodynamic drag, up to 10 % of fuel consumption, the new longer and thinner wings are equipped with foldable tips and a variety of flight control surfaces so that they act similar to bird’s wings with feathers 🦅 As a result, the wings of an aircraft automatically adapt to the current flight conditions by using various sensors to detect turbulence and make appropriate adjustments to the control surfaces. The fact that UpNext chose our actuators for this demonstrator shows the trust that Airbus has in each and every one of us. Big compliment to my team! PS. ✅ The Consortium for Research and Innovation in Aerospace in Quebec (CRIAQ) is reporting on the latest progress on its Autonomy of Future Air Mobility (AMAF) project, aimed at structuring the increasing autonomy of vehicles involved in advanced air mobility. Project partners Thales and Presagis (now TXT GROUP) are combining their expertise in digital technologies, AI, critical systems and simulation to design the components needed for the autonomous aerospace of the future. Drawing on the combined expertise of Université Laval and Thales, a new mission planning tool has also been developed to optimise energy use by hybrid aircraft. 💬 “Future air mobility is one of CRIAQ’s three strategic pillars, and the growth of this sector has multiple implications in terms of safety and regulatory compliance, and above all in terms of social acceptability. Maritime AI Collaboration - Project Kickoff Five months ago we had an exciting visit from a delegation from Odense in Lübeck, focused on cutting-edge Robotics, AI and Medical Technology. - Today, we started a new funded INTERREG-project on "Maritime AI Collaboration" between #TZL and #ErhvervshusFyn. Together we aim to investigate opportunities of cross-border collaborations in the field of Maritime AI. As there are plenty of ongoing activities on both sides of the border, in Germany and Denmark, the pre-project will conduct a feasibility study that highlights the opportunities to carry out further collaborative activities, based on regional innovation capacities. The goal is to verify whether it is possible to position the southwestern Baltic Sea Region as a Super-Cluster on Maritime AI. Business Region Fyn and Technikzentrum Lübeck intend to link new and existing maritime AI actors such as clusters, networks, innovative companies, startups, and public institutions from Germany and Denmark to foster cross-border collaborations and to set up collaborative ventures. On the Danish side the pre-project synergizes with NextGen Robotics, Denmark’s beacon of business for robots, drones, and autonomous ship operations, led by Business Region Fyn in collaboration with Odense Robotics, Denmark's cluster for robotics, automation, and drones. On the German side activities at the University of Lübeck - Laboratory for Autonomous Driving, Institute of Robotics and Cognitive Systems, Fraunhofer IMTE, the Chamber of Commerce Lübeck/Schleswig-Holstein, the Logistic Cluster logRegio e. V., established corporates and maritime AI StartUps like Unleash Future Boats are being involved, more to come.
