Sustainability involves making informed choices providing valuable insights into environmental impacts.   As a pioneer, Van der Hoeven is dedicated to advancing sustainability in horticulture. Our Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) evaluates 16 environmental impact categories throughout the life cycle of food production systems, from raw material extraction to disposal. At the heart of this movement lies the Holobiont Theory, which revolutionizes our understanding of the interconnectedness between plants, animals, and microorganisms. Regenerative agriculture recognizes that healthy soil ecosystems, fueled by biologically rich compost, are essential for producing nutrient-dense crops and supporting the overall health of our food system. By nurturing diverse microbial communities in the soil, we not only enhance soil fertility and resilience but also ensure that our food contains essential probiotics for both humans and animals. Let's talk about the value of soil health. At Agrology, we envision a future where real-time, in-field respiration monitoring is available for all farmers. While we didn't invent this concept—tools like LI-COR Environmental's instruments have been around for years—we did pioneer the first continuous respiration system available for everyday use by farmers. By closing the feedback loop between management practices and soil biological activity, we offer a more valuable proposition: Monitoring soil health is crucial for maintaining, and even growing, a farmers' most important asset. This innovation is why Agrology monitors CO2 fluxes not only in the soil but also in the surrounding atmosphere and canopy. This comprehensive approach provides insights into how CO2 is absorbed by the canopy and returned to the soil, ultimately enabling us to measure soil carbon flux and emissions across entire fields. We're still fine-tuning this with machine learning based on the data provided by eddy covariance towers, but our cross-validated accuracy is pretty darn close (more coming on that soon). Increased carbon sequestration is just a secondary effect of a healthier soil microbiome. Improved soil health leads to better soil structure, increased pore space, and enhanced water infiltration and retention. The microbiome produces a sticky substance, often referred to as microbial "goo," that forms soil aggregates. Bacterial communities in general create the smaller aggregates while the fungal communities glue these smaller aggregates together into medium and large size aggregates. The continual formation of aggregates helps combat the formation of hardpan layers, improving root growth and water movement. We see tangible benefits in our customers' data--increasing organic matter, boosting water retention and enhancing nutrient cycling. Their vibrant microbiomes make nutrients more available to plants, boosts pest, disease, and stress resistance. The microbiome helps plants produce secondary metabolites like bioflavonoids and tannins, which contribute to plant health and pest resistance. This infographic underscores the importance of monitoring microbiome activity as it reveals soil life levels, leading to multiple benefits. This approach justifies the cost of our technology, while providing farmers with the actionable insights needed to maintain and improve soil health.
