Proud to share the collaborative work by my colleague Emily D. Melton, PhD, our Bioscience at IFF Lead Regulatory Scientist in Microbial Strain Safety, together with other industry experts: https://lnkd.in/gyT9AaXQ. This paper is a significant contribution supporting decision makers' ability to fully consider safe pathways for deliberate release of genetically engineered microbes (#GEMs), regardless of the current regulatory framework. Such full consideration of safe deployment of GEMs (aka #GMMs in the EU) would benefit applications such as: 👉 utilization of (currently wasted) spent fermentation #biomass, 👉 deployment of modern biotechnology in #cropbiologicals, 👉 advanced versions of #foodcultures and #probiotics for use in food, feed, and supplements. 👉 or simply to clean up (after) ourselves. The timing of this scientific publication is perfect in light of the EU discussions on Gene Editing / New Genomic Techniques (#NGTs) and stakeholder initiatives in both the EU and US to design better regulatory pathways for safe and effective deployment of engineered microbes. Interest continues to grow in using transgenic plants as a source of secondary metabolites. Genetic engineering technology has produced plant systems that are efficient at producing specific secondary metabolites or recombinant proteins. Published by MDPI, this journal article details how research has shown that embracing plant systems and the use of bioreactors enables production to be increased to industrial scales, quickly and cost-effectively. By taking plant-based production out of the field and into the factory, SAMABRIVA’s innovative technology offers a scalable and sustainable way to make high value #biomolecules. It’s an approach that’s already proving irresistible to the #pharmaceuticalindustry. https://lnkd.in/edw_a63X #biomanufacturing #bioprocessing #bioproduction #lifesciences

I’m thrilled to announce the publication of my first scientific article 🎉,titled “Oxidative deterioration of polypropylene by redox mediators and yeast expressing a fungal recombinant laccase”! In this study, we explored a novel method to accelerate the degradation of polypropylene (PP), one of the most recalcitrant polymers to biodegradation. By using redox mediators and a genetically modified yeast strain to produce a fungal laccase enzyme, we successfully induced oxidation on the PP surface. Our results showed significant structural modifications in the polymer, increasing its wettability and creating exfoliated regions that promote the breakdown of the PP film. A big thanks to my professor, Michele Maria Bianchi, and to all the other co-authors for their invaluable support!🙏 Read the full article here: [https://lnkd.in/d38tGtnz] #Biodegradation #Sustainability #ScientificResearch #Polymers #PlasticDegradation

HepG2 cells are continuing to thrive! On day 7, they received fresh medium and are expected to be ready for subculture tomorrow. But that's not all -- during a medium change on day 5, I saved the medium and seeded it into a new flask. To my pleasant surprise, HepG2 cells that were alive but floating in the saved medium, have now adhered and begun to grow in the new flask. Now, there are two flasks of seemingly healthy-growing hepatocytes! It's fascinating to consider what factors contributed to this success: - old supplier vs new supplier - standard culture flasks vs collagen-coated culture flasks - centrifuging out the DMSO vs diluting it out - medium change after 24 hours vs no medium change after 24 hours - no antibiotics vs antibiotics (I hope not!) Have you dealt with a mammalian cell line (or fungal, or bacterial) that should have been "textbook" but proved more challenging than you expected? #biochem #biochemistry #biochemical #biochemist #biochemists #BiochemistryResearch #CellCulture #HepG2 #insulin #InsulinResistance #InsulinSignaling #laboratory #labresearch #LaboratoryResearch #MammalianCellCulture #MetabolicBiochemistry #metabolism #research #science #stem
