Becoming friends with Tamika Catchings, WNBA star and 4 time Olympic gold medalist had reminded me of a really important philosophy. “Treat the unimportant importantly.” We have all heard, “Treat the janitor like the CEO,” but what does that look like? To me, it’s taking a grocery cart from the corral, so that the person collecting the carts (usually someone with a lesser role) has one less shopping cart to bring inside. I need one anyways. So why not help out where I can. It’s also returning your cart to the corral when you are finished with it. I am sure the person who has to collect the carts would appreciate not having to walk all over collecting carts that people just leave at their parking space. It’s the little things. You can say you treat the janitor like the CEO, but what do your actions say? Tamika lives these values every day. She doesn’t use her status to get an advantage. Instead she focuses on the underserved in the Indianapolis area. She treats everyone with human respect and kindness. Together with other colleagues, it was a pleasure to chat with Julia Métraux at Mother Jones about the important topic of extreme heat and political rallies as we head into the 2024 U.S. Campaign and summer season. I appreciated the chance to highlight that for political rallies, as with any other mass gathering in the summer, that organizers should take a multi-step assessment: - If an extreme heat event is occurring, should the rally continue, or be postponed or shortened altogether? - Duration / timing - can the event be organized for a shorter amount of time, or with generous breaks for cooling, or at a specific time of day (e.g. early evening) where the heat might be abating? - Location - can the event be held at an area that has natural shade / cooling via breeze as opposed to metal + concrete - Cooling centres - might there be facilities / cooling centre nearby especially for vulnerable populations to retreat to, amid prolonged events, etc. -Supports - ensuring distribution of water and fluids, ice packs, shade, and encouraging attendees to wear light-coloured clothing while avoiding heat amplifying environments (e.g. metal bleachers, concrete areas etc.) - Ensuring all attendees are aware of risks of heat stroke / heat exhaustion, etc. to call for help that should be readily available. While vital to continue to allow expression and statements on the campaign trail, it's also important to ensure the saftey of participants of rallies, particularly for vulnerable populations, to avoid any untoward effects.
