undoubtedly Rwanda is the best in Africa

🌍 The journey of the Agriculture Worldwide Team through Uganda continues, leading us to Lira, situated on the eastern banks of the Nile River. The trip from Arua to Lira was an adventure in itself, approximately six hours by car as we drove through the landscapes of the nature safari reserve.   💡 In Lira, we encountered a replicate experiment similar to the one conducted by East West Seed Knowledge Transfer trainers in Terego. However, a notable difference was observed in the cultivation of cabbages outside of their typical season, reflecting the diverse environmental conditions of this different location. These variations in planting seasons yielded differences in results, offering valuable insights into the dynamics of agricultural systems and production.   Our discussions in Lira centered on the topic of pythium control, particularly concerning the health and vigor of seedlings. This discussion extended to the cultivation of okra, where comprehensive pest and disease control strategies were advised and discussed among the team.   🛣 As we continue journey through Uganda, we gather insights that will contribute to the advancement of sustainable agriculture practices in this dynamic landscape. Africa is the future of agriculture. This week, I'm here in Kampala, Uganda attending Harvest Money Expo - Uganda's biggest agricultural exhibition! Last week I was in Germany, attending two globally leading agriculture trade shows, and spoke to countless people who flew in from all over the world. Every single person agreed that Africa is uniquely positioned to be an agricultural powerhouse in the future. With fertile soils, a favourable climate, and positioned right at the heart of East Africa; Uganda is on the verge of something big - if it can solve 3 key issues: 1️⃣ Increase farmer productivity. 2️⃣ Increase farmer financing. 3️⃣ Give farmers access to more markets, both local and internationally. And, based on some of the conversations I've had and projects I've seen. These problems will soon be solved within the next 3-5 years, creating massive opportunity for those who get in early! FtMA continues to make strides in our activities in Tanzania 🌍 We are currently in 6 regions, serving over 128,984 farmers through 405 FSCs. Agriculture is the basis of Tanzania's economy. Of the 2.1 million hectares that are under production, 95% are farmed by smallholder farmers using traditional methods. Informal and unstructured market constrained, including restricted access to profitable markets, traps most farmers into subsistence-level activities, where there is no critical mass for profitable agriculture business. FtMA, with the support of our Donors, Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and MFAT in Auckland are working to solve these problems through innovative approaches, supporting smallholders at the last/first mile, and by strengthening their resilience to climate shocks. There is a growing trend of African entrepreneurs creating demo farms across Africa. These projects serve as powerful examples of what can be achieved through sustainable farming. These demo farms are about more than just creating commercial farms—they’re a showcase for technology inspiring their nations to adopt sustainable practices and invest in agricultural infrastructure on a grand scale. We feel very lucky to have engineered the greenhouses for such farms in Mali, Burkina Faso, Rwanda and our latest venture in Guinea. Each, a step toward self-sufficiency and economic growth, while proving what’s possible for the future of farming in Africa. Netsanet Tadesse, a resident of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is a devoted mother raising three children. She actively participates in a beekeeping cooperative located in Shiro Meda, Addis Ababa, as part of NCA's Ethiopia-Connect urban farming project. Initially established three years ago with support from the city administration, the cooperative faced unexpected challenges that stalled its progress, leading members to postpone their aspirations. However, since last year, Netsanet and her fellow cooperative members have revitalized their honey production efforts following comprehensive training sessions and the provision of essential inputs like beehives and bee colonies, significantly enhancing their beekeeping skills. Recently, they celebrated their first honey harvest. The Ethiopia-Connect project, funded by Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, is being implemented by NCA Ethiopia in partnership with the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church-Development and Inter-Church Aid Commission since 2021. 🌱 Kicking Off Season A in Rwanda’s Agriculture! 🌱 September marks the beginning of Season A in Rwanda, a pivotal time for our agricultural sector. During this season, farmers across the country are diligently preparing their land and planting essential crops like maize, beans, Irish potatoes.... 🌽🥔 As we anticipate the rains that will nurture these crops, this season represents not just the growth of food, but the growth of our economy and the sustenance of our communities. Supporting agriculture is supporting Rwanda’s future. Our agricultural practices also align with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13: Climate Action and National Strategy for Transformation II (NST2). 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞! 🐝 A year ago, Dorcas Aid Tanzania started a PIP project in Chemba with 80 innovative farmers. The region is facing several challenges, including land degradation, deforestation, climate change, low yields and lack of diversification. To address these challenges, one of the main activities of the project was the distribution of 53 improved beehives among 29 farmers. Through this programme, participating farmers are supported to: ➡️ Increase honey production. ➡️ Improve their household income. ➡️ Diversify their livelihood strategies, making them more resilient. ➡️ Acquire knowledge of best agricultural practices. The farmers from Tanzania are now working to form a cooperative, which will make them more effective and improve their access to the market.
